Apple Vision Pro is facing declining interest and sales among consumers

In brief: Apple's $3,500 Vision Pro augmented reality headset was always going to be a product that appealed mostly to hardcore fans of the company and tech enthusiasts with deep pockets, but it seems even they are losing interest as demand for demos wanes and sales fall from a couple of units per day to a handful in an entire week.

It took Apple eight years and billions of dollars to create the Vision Pro. While the $3,500 price tag meant it was never going to be a huge seller, there was still plenty of interest and sales during its initial launch period – remember all the people using the headset in unadvisable situations, like while driving a car. There was also the software developer who wore one at his wedding.

But that initial wave of interest and excitement has ended. Bloomberg's Apple expert Mark Gurman writes that the number of people taking the (up to) 25-minute demos of the headset in Apple stores has declined drastically, and many of those who do make bookings often don't show up.

Sales of the Vision Pro are also reported to have fallen off a cliff. It's estimated that Apple sold between 160,000 and 180,000 devices in pre-orders across a weekend in January ahead of the official launch.

What might be of equal concern to Apple are the reports of those who bought a Vision Pro hardly using the headset anymore. Even Gurman says he used his unit several times per day during the first couple of months of ownership, but he's now down to using it once or twice per week.

Gurman cites the same complaints other people have about the Vision Pro for his reduced use: it's cumbersome, weighty, and there is no killer app. The process of setting it up to watch a movie simply is not worth the time, he says. There are also users complaining of discomfort, neck pain, and even black eyes after using the device.

Apple's answer could be to copy what Google did with Google Glass and focus more on the Vision Pro's use in the enterprise space. "We're thrilled to see the innovative ways organizations are already using Apple Vision Pro, from planning fire response operations to iterating on the most intricate details of an engine," said Susan Prescott, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations and Enterprise Marketing.

Apple is still bringing new features to the Vision Pro, including the recently launched Spatial Personas that updates the virtual representations of users to make them look like floating ghostly torsos.

The Vision Pro is only on sale in the US, but it's set to come to other countries later this year. Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed last month that China will be one of these locations.

Sounds about right. Apple didn't even try to make it very game friendly (which is where the best excuse to use it is found for an average consumer). No controller support, and no attempt to support already existing stores and libraries.

Beat Saber is my go-to for a workout (and fun) these days with my Quest 2. There's no way that one would work properly using the Vision Pro lol

After watching many reviews, I think vision pro is good..
some aspects are better than other VRs..
the one aspect it worse than other is the price..
the price is simply outrageous..

I'm sure it's a controversial position but the Meta 3 is just better and more sensible in my mind for the people who would want to see the current state of VR.

My wife still uses hers for beat saber daily... just really hard to do custom with Meta 3 vs Meta 2.

If she never touched it again after today.... after all these months, I would still feel we got good value, and we would be in line for a Quest 4.

Hardly a surprise. An *****ic price tag and no real use. I really can’t understand why they even tried. Apple is loosing contact with reality

Our Quest 2 has gotten loads of use and still does, with the rest of the fam playing Beat Saber and the youngest plays a bunch of different VR games with friends. No way I'd get a $3500 device for that but then I don't have a $3500 device for anything other than driving or living in.

When the Quest 2 is £200 and the Quest 3 is £400, with a huge library of onboard games and also PCVR support - Is anyone other than Apple surprised?

I cannot imagine myself sitting with a screen so close to my eyes for so long... My only use case would be gaming - specifically flying (flight simulator, Arma, Star Citizen). Oh SNAP! You cant play those games on Apple devices.
I would expect them to start working on content. Btw, DCS supports VR and it has a lot of positive reviews. I would not be surprised if this was one of the first games to come to vision pro.
So yeah, if Apple wants to keep selling this device, they have to start making content and make it quick.

Apple just haven't figured out you can only feed junk to the masses for so long. Their policy on equipment and services started going down hill once they gave the WOZ the boot and has gone nowhere but down ever since.

I don’t believe Apple is surprised at all with this, its very niche first gen product. Apple has to spend them R&D dollars on something. There is a killer product here somewhere, just need to iterate and iterate until they find it.

That's a shame, and the marketing and hype was so beautiful

Also a shame I won't be able to talk to someone wearing this and see their eyes like the freaking iSheep they are.

Weird thing is Crapple knows how to do reasonably price, reasonably agnostic with the basic Ipad and TV box. Still they will limit Ipad for input devices etc - just because

Any product sold with weird influencers and aspirational vibes is full on putrid cult like vomit inducing to me at least. No matter how famous I was, I would avoid night clubs, restaurants culling "losers" at the door bestowing golden tickets. Can't stand the BS

If I want to be special I'll head to the beach with the other sneetches to get a star on my belly or better yet wear a 3 wolves howling at the moon T-shirt

Ie Crapple drop the influencer like BS. pretending you have products so special that you can control your sheep and limit their rights/abilities is just nauseating. or at least go full hog and sell Apple promise rings, and sheep collars

Hot Take:
Maybe some of us are just waiting for version 2, the one that resolves some of the glaring issues...

( I know this comment is going to get hate... hit me! XD )

This is to be expected. This is not a 350 bucks device that people can still afford to try. This is a 3500 bucks device, and that means most people will not try it. I mean even if you are super rich, it doesn't mean you want to wear a souped up techy goggles on your head. So given the very limited up take, there is very little incentive for software developers to prioritize their software for it. All which will end up in a downward spiral to it being canned. If you ask me, I think the idea of an Apple branded car is better than some fancy headset targeting an extremely niche market.
