Inactive AVG malfunction

I currently have AVG Free 8.5 installed on my Toshiba with Vista. When trying to get on the internet I wasn't able to get access. My security settings are showing the AVG is not active for virus protection and it wont let me cut them on. When I tried to remove AVG so I could try again, it would not let me remove and gave me an internal error message. I have tried to repair, remove and it will not let me. I can gain access to the internet from my PC but not my laptop?? Please help!

Use another working computer and USB flash drive for transferring necessary files to "bad" computer.
