Bizarre: Windows taskbar shows improper icons in small icon mode

So, pretty self explanatory, I have this super bizarre problem, whenever I have my taskbar set to small icons in the properties, the taskbar icons are all wrong, for example, the Windows Task Manager will show up as Google Chrome (application seem to take a fancy for that icon) or Adobe Lightroom will show up as the Windows Picture Viewer. I have searched everywhere, and all I can find are cases of missing icons, which is not my problem. Perhaps this is linked to the other problem I am having. (Half of monitor is out of sync.)

Don't know if I can help but will also try take a look at your problem.

First, just to be clear, note the 3 groups of icons along the bottom of screen image below. On left are Quick Launch icons, middle are open programs, on right are notification icons. Which group(s) are wrong when small? Also, can you right click a wrong icon and select Pin to Start Menu. Does it get pinned with the right or wrong icon?

The open programs. When I pin an icon it shows up properly. I just tried with windows task manager, when I opened it it showed up with the steam icon, and when I pinned it it had the traditional computer icon.

OK. I tried googling windows 7 small icon cache and found Windows 7 - Icon Cache - Rebuild. I'm also not sure it should make a difference but try rebuilding the cache when in small icon mode (and again in normal mode as well if that doesn't work)

Found one more interesting link. I haven't read through this in detail to try and understand all the info provided but it sounds like they present 2 methods to customize/change taskbar icons. My thought if they can be changed to what you want, maybe the originals got corrupted somehow and one of the methods they present might allow you to restore the correct small icon to what you want/it should be?

I have finally located the problem! It's only been like a month or so -_- So simple enough, I used a icon changer to change all my icons, and when I uninstalled it, it didn't replace one of the backups properly, so could come please supply me with these files for 64-bit Windows 7? It would help me out so so much! Just RAR or ZIP it and send it to ImAustinJacobMorrison@Gmail.com or just post them on a file sharing site, I would be most gratuitous!

Oh no! Surely you don't want us to expose our systems to malware by using a file sharing site!

Try this instead:
Re-build the Windows 7 icon cache

1. Stop Explorer (use the Task Manager to do this)
2. Open the command prompt> type cmd in the Start Search box> right click the cmd.exe in the list > click "run as Administrator"
3. Go to: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local
4. Use this command to unhide the IconCache.db> attrib -h IconCache.db
5. Delete the IconCache.db file:> del IconCache.db
6. Start Explorer (or restart your computer).

Awesome, Thank you, I don't know why but when I installed Corel Ulead Video Studio this problem occurred so I restored a reg copy but still the problem persisted (Yes I done a reboot) Then I found your answer and I was skeptical as I tried other methods such as a bat file another member supplied but it didn't work so I used your method and it work without a hiccup, I used ctrl alt del and ended Explorer after the instructions you have given then selected File New Task "Explorer.exe" and that done the trick, Didn't even have to restart my computer.
