C\windows\system32\config\system corrupt

I wonder how the system32 directory can be empty. this wouldn't have many reason...? a "virus" or even the admin account would not be able to delete everything in this folder, would it? and windows would not "self-terminate" (yeah, I love this phrase from T2 - lol).
So what else could have caused this? a broken hdd would be my best guess.
but I can't believe the folder is just empty. please verify this when you are back home. it just doesn't make sense... hmm.

btw what is "League Against Norton"?

sorry for the delay replying, i was ill yesterday. Yes the system32 folder is completely empty so it looks like a full restore. I can still archive off all documents though if i can find a way of installing a cd writing software onto the bartpe cd and recreate the bartpe cd cant i?

I reinstalled windows xp, using my original disk, and told it to overwrite the existing c:\\windows directory and low and behold it looks as if everything has gone back to normal.

Thanks for your help
