Solved Cannot install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware: Access is Denied

As a symptom of the infection in my original post, all of my personal files (games, pictures, other documents, etc.) were hidden
I wasn't aware of it as I don't see it stated in your original post.
Now it's too late to run UnHide as we cleaned temporary files.
You'll have to unhide everything manually.

As for a firewall it's always recommended to have both (hardware and software) firewalls on.
I do have both active.

As for the latest MBAM scan I suspect it may be false positive.

Okay, no problem. The hidden files symptom was in my EDIT text at the bottom of the original post. I posted the EDIT before your first reply, but maybe it was after you already looked at my OP. I didn't want to reply to myself just for that.

I will activate Windows Firewall as well then.

Thanks again.

Hm, out of curiosity, do you think there was anything else in the Temp files that the infection would have moved there? I mean might I have lost anything important in that process of cleaning up temp files? Or would there just have been something stored in there that UnHide would use to reset those properties?

Also, in step ten of your last instructions, it says to run defrag only in WinXP. I have been using Auslogics Disk Defrag for the past year or two and run it after game installs, etc. Is that still advisable in Vista?

No.

Vista and Windows 7 have build in defrag, which runs in the background whenever necessary so you don't need any extra defrag program.

Broni,

I have finished your last list of instructions. The Secunia software installed, but when I try to have it download updates for software, it launches Internet Explorer. IE then immediately quits, so I can't actually download anything.

However, File Hippo does seem to be working, and appears to detect the same version discrepancies for installed software.

As for how the computer is running: basically smooth. I get occasional crashes for background processes. I still need to go through and manually unhide my files and folders. Otherwise it's working far better than it was last week.

Hopefully things continue working relatively smoothly. Thanks again for all of your assistance.

You're very welcome
