I did as instructed. I'm making this new thread per recommendation of the thread to which I was referred.

1) ESET and the three downloaded applications reported no infection and prompted no alerts or warnings.

2) I ran the GMER scan. After the scan, a prompt came up saying GMER found no malware in my system. The log it produced was completely blank. I ran it again with the same results.

3) Please note that I unplugged two peripherals from my system: my external HDD (not connected when issue occurred, remains disconnected until I'm reasonably sure PC is clean) and desktop speakers.
