Thank you for all your help.

I dont know if this is related to the problems I was having, but the task manager is still disabled on one of my sons accounts, and our cd/dvd player is no longer playing our cds. I get a message "windows media player cannont play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer" ???

thanks again
Ray

As for your task manager problem, take a look at this thread HERE.

Your Windows media player problem is caused by not having the correct codec installed. Download and install this codec pack.

Hello again,

my computer is running slower than it use to, and Im getting a yellow triangular icon on my task bar saying There are new updates for my computer.

Will a fresh HJT log do any good?

The other day NAV did a full auto scan and spyware sheriff came up again, but instead of leaving the ignore action to be taken, I clicked fix.

I dont feel safe doing anything personal so am considering doing a full reformat or cleaning, will this get rid of all traces of spyware??

Thanks

Ray

Doing a reformat will get rid of any nasties on your system.

However, before you consider doing that, post a fresh HJT log and I`ll see what I can do.

Good afternoon Howard,

thank you for all your help.

I am reading thru yourTrojan pakes and other nasties post, and Im going to do the whole thing over and will post fresh logs.

My question is that you state "ONLY INSTALL ANTI VIRUS/FIREWALL IF YOU DONT ALREADY HAVE ANY", well I currently have Norton Anti virus/spyware and firewall, (which I plan on uninstalling).

Do I need to uninstall before installing Avast and zone alarm?

Thanks

Ray

As you plan on uninstalling Symantec/Norton you should do the following.

Download the antivirus and firewall programme you are going to replace Symantec/Norton with and disconnect from the net.

Uninstall Symantec/Norton. If you have any problems with the uninstall, see this thread HERE.

Once Symantec/Norton has been completely uninstalled, reboot your system.

Install whichever firewall you chose, followed by whichever antivirus programme you chose and reboot your system the required number of times.

Reconnect to the net and run the antivirus updates.

Follow the rest of the instructions.

Hi Howard,

Im doing the process again, but as I am running ccleaner its asking me if I want to backup changes to the registry. Do I say yes or ?

thanks

Yes, backup the registry. If after a few days everything seems ok, which it should do, you can delete the reg backup.

hey there again, I started running the avast antivirus about 1:30 this afternoon and had to leave for work. Its now 6:30pm and it is still running????, what did I do something wrong???
I selected the thorough scan, and is scanning c: and d: drives, was I only supposed to select C:???

NAV didnt take this long and while at work, someone stated that avast only took 58 minutes to do a thorough scan,,,

Thanks for any input

Ray

well it finally stopped, and there are 118 items that could not be scanned. Thereis an action buttton on the top left hand corner, what do I do now???

Thanks

Ray

I`ve never actually used Avast, so can`t tell you how long it should take. However, since you have told it to scan more than one drive, it`s definitely going to take longer than if it was only scanning one drive. Obviously depending on the size and the amount of data stored on your drives, this will affect the amount of time it needs.

You could always cancel the scan and try scanning just one drive at a time.

thanks, but it did finish scanning. there are 118 items that could not be scanned. There is an action button, do I delete, move, chest ????
thanks again,

Ray

Like I said, I`ve never actually used Avast. I suggest you read the instructions.

Personally, I recommend you quarantine any files, that way, if you notice any problems, you can always restore them at a later date.

well I spent some time on line trying to find some information, but maybe my mom was right about my intelligence, but I couldnt find anything other than if something is in the could not be scanned that it is normal.

What AV software do you recommend for future help?

I will post fresh logs, but since I dont think I did the AV scan correct, I dont know if it will give you all the needed info.
thanks

Ray

fresh logs

good morning Howard, attached are my fresh logs.
as mentioned before, I had some problems with Avast AV, but I hope these logs will have the info you need.
I also had some problems running look2me.
Let me know what you come up with.

Thanks

Ray

Your HJT log is clean.

However, there`s still a Symantec/Norton service running that needs stopping.

Click start/run and type services.msc into the run box and press the enter key.

When the window appears, maximise it. Double click on the following services(if there) and select stop if they are running. Set the startup type to disabled. Click apply/ok for each service you disable.

Symantec Lic NetConnect service

Close the services window.

Locate and delete the following bold files and/or directories(if there).

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared

Reboot your system.

If you`re not keen on Avast, you can always uninstall it and use the AVG free prgramme.

I`ve used the free AVG antivirus programme for a long time and have never had any problems. You can get it HERE.

Hello Howard,

I went ahead and did your above mentioned recommendations.

I was reviewing my previous and new AVG logs, and it appears that some of the same items are showing up on new log, does this mean its getting infected by the same thing again??

When I used to log onto the internet, I had Yahoo as my home page, and now, if I noticed correct, Im being redirected to MSN homepage.

As always, thanks for all your help and time, and speaking of time, when do you find time to get some shut eye?.
Fortunately for me, seems like youre always there and get back to me very quick.

Ray

The files in your last AVG log were just tracking cookies and aren`t anything to be unduly concerned about. In anycase, avg has cleaned/deleted them.

Running the Ccleaner programme as per the instructions in this thread HERE, will delete those files.

Regards Howard :)

Hello again,

I was reading thru another post, regarding the background on their desktop being a different blue. Mine also changed around the same time that I started having my problems.

I was on line earlier and msn appears to be my home page, but I prefer yahoo, so when I changed it, I got lots of msn pages and had to click as fast as I could to shut them all down.

My PC is pretty slow now, and when I was going thru my computer folders, wild tangent has some items in the folder, is this OK??

sorry, for putting so many items on this post, but I just want to feel that all is somewhat OK.

Thanks

Ray

Wild Tangent is not ok and should be uninstalled asap.

Please post a fresh HJT log.

do I need to do the entire process or can I just run HJT and post the log?

a have another question, everytime I turn on my PC, i get a common window and a windows instant messenger, is there anyway of having them not come up when I turn on my PC ??

thanks for all your help,
Ray

Yes, just post a fresh HJT log.

I`ll see if I can disable the startup items for you.

Regards Howard :)
