Another thing you can check is in the Device Manager see if your hard drive has reverted to the slower PIO transfer mode instead of the faster DMA or UDMA modes.
how do I check this? :(

Thats easy.

I noticed that when I went to check what services I have running, the list is really really long. I think that this might very well be the problem.
Now, How do I know what services to disable? I have a screen shot of half the list but don't know how to post it here.

By the way, the machine is running a bit faster since the defrag.

I also 2 months or so ago, cleaned out and reloaded everything and nothing changed much.
How could you not see this ?

you might also want to ctrl+alt+del to the taskmanager to check whether certain programs or processes are hogging resources (specifically ram, forcing your computer to use the pagefile for all the normal programs).

also, i sometimes encountered a program that worked fine for a while, then all of a sudden started using 99% cpu load. The only remedy was to kill it in the task manager

Disable KHALMNPR if you don't use Logitech's Advanced Media Features. Disable CTDetect because you don't need it. Disable NMBgMonitor.
