No still could be software

If you've installed pcanywhere then there is a file in %systemroot%\system32\drivers\ named gernuwa.sys
Remove this file using the recovery console and run setup (Repair)

The only damage (if you can call it that)
Is it removes all your Windows security updates, back to the version of your CD

Oh and you need your key again

BTW i did a memtest, and nothing was wrong, it found no errors, and i pressed esc and it came up with the "hard error"...

I need that program then, that finds it, because i can't find it anywhere

I have done the repair, but i took the disc out after the 1st reboot! I think it is better now. I am running a full scan just in case , but not in safe mode. If it isn't ok, i will post baack here, do the repair thing again, and then run a scan in safe mode.

you have to go into the boot sequence andf change the primary i think it is to cd drive so it boots off.

They are on the last page, they are the latest ones
I upgraded his computer to SP3 today, and i don't think it was the cause, but System Tray Triangle keeps popping up saying "blah" is corrupt/invalid.

I definitly think you should follow kimsland advice as well. There is a few things you should remove, then let's see if we can get combofix to work.

Remove bad HijackThis entries
  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

----------------------------------------------------------

Combofix
  • Download Combofix to your desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • A window will open with a warning.
  • When the scan completes it will open a text window. Please attach that log back here together with a fresh HJT log.
Caution - do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Combofix is a very powerful tool so please do NOT do anything without instruction

Combofix will automatically save the log file to C:\combofix.txt

Did you do this already then?

Ok i thought i had fixed this... I was wrong! Now, when i go into the Xp CD from boot, it says it can't find a hardrive! I can boot into normal windows after a nights rest, but anything to strenuous, say a full virus scan it BSOD on me!
Please help!

Habylab, this type of fault can be related to a faulty HardDrive (obviously) or data cabling
But, it is possible that even the Floppy drive and data cable can cause this strange behaviour. Therefore I would suggest to disconnect the floppy from the Motherboard.
Actually, also unplug any not required PCI devices (like addon Sound card or 56K Modem etc)
You may like to check (or replace) your Hard Drive (and/or Cdrom Drive) data cable(s)

Basically you need to get past this Dell logo and continue to somewhere (even Safe Mode)
By the way, detach any not required externals too, like printer so forth.

Try again
You did mention that you would try this.

What you gotta do is do a Windows Repair install.

Put the CD in, boot of it, and choose to install windows, then say Repair Install , Not repair recovery console thats something else.

Soo that that and in about 40 minutes PC will work again, and you will have to do the updates....

Hey I was reading this thread and wanted to add just 2 things.

1) have you tested the hard drive? if not download DFT from the link below and burn it onto a cd the same way as the memtest then boot off of the cd run a advance test and post back the code it gives you EX: 0x00

2) have you tested for a boot sector virus. If not test for one.

DFT

I ma gonig to try DFT and also what kimsland said earlier. I have a heavy suspicion it is a dieing hardrive and a virus. I downloaded Spyware doctor, and it found 3 elevated items in a quick scan! When i went to do a full scan, it went blue screen.

How do i check for a boot sector virus?

NEW: I looked at task manager when the computer started to non respond and every process was average memory usage, e.g. 1,000-10,000k. But One was 101,000k which was spyware doctor. Funny thing is, is that i had recently installed this, so this hasn't caused the problem.
memory leak?
