It's been an awful long time in the making but the reboot of Doom finally has a release date. Publisher Bethesda also released a new teaser trailer and shared details about a forthcoming premium collector's edition.

id Software's upcoming shooter will be the first new entry in the franchise since Doom 3 dropped in 2004 but that wasn't the original plan. The game, originally referred to as Doom 4, was hinted at back in 2007 and confirmed to be in development a year later.

Doom 4 reportedly made it pretty far into the development cycle before being scrapped entirely, leaving the team to start over with a clean slate. A teaser video of the Doom reboot was revealed at E3 2014 and the rest, as they say, is history.

The Doom collector's edition was created in conjunction with TriForce and includes a foot-tall statue of a Revenant, one of the game's most iconic baddies. Bethesda said the statue is molded from actual in-game 3D files and stands on an LED-lit base with a slow-spinning turbine from the UAC facility on Mars. The game itself will arrive in a collector-style metal case.

The new Doom launches on May 13 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Expect to pay $59.99 for the standard edition or $119.99 for the limited-edition bundle. Those that pre-order the game will also receive a Demon Multiplayer Pack that contains a demon armor set with three skin variations, six metallic paint colors and three id logos that can be applied to armor and weapons.

Pre-orders also come with half a dozen Hack Modules, one-time consumable items that can be used in multiplayer matches.

Well this could be fun but I will make my own mind up. Everyone has grabbed their crotch and that is infectious. No one wants to be seen as out of the ordinary. I will buy it but not early

I see they don't believe in lots of textures or tessellation...that's just voodoo crap.

I guess you don't need them when you create Serious Sam Doom.

I cringe whenever I hear the word, pre-order. I've done it with Crysis 2 and BF4 - never again. At least not until the benefit is a decent monetary discount.

I only ever ordered GTA 5 and that worked out. If I can get the Prime discount I am going to do Doom also

I played Doom I and II. Missed Final Doom and 3. Looking forward to a remake of the first one. Same experience, yet with updated technology

Looks interesting, though like every other AA or AAA title I'll simply be waiting until the furore has died down and it drops to the usual £18 ($26) point.

Well, uhmm... the guy in the trailer was doing ok for a while there. Then, as in some other ventures, things went wrong. I'm sure a health pack or two will put him back in the fight.
