DVD RW problem

I have a Sony DVD RW DRU-830A, which recently only reads certain CD's and DVD's which it prefers...hehe. I downloaded and installed the firmware from Sony website and also delete "lower filters" from the registry entry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318) but i didnt find an entry named "upper filters" (this was mentioned by someone on this forum) but still it does not work.

I am thinking of replacing the drive or can someone help me save some money?

As the drive obviously works, albeit only with certain media, I suggest the drive is probably in need of replacement.

However, maybe try running a lens cleaner through the drive and see if that improves things any.

Thanks man that was fast, I like this place.

I will try that and if not will probably replace it. Also can you let me know a brand which might work better than Sony, as i this Sony has problems (from what i read on the forum regarding the problems with DVD players and writers)

LG and Pioneer for the mainstream. Liteon is decent as well. Plextor for the connoisseur.
