Likely if YOU didn't overclock it, it isn't overclocked, so I wouldn't be too concerned about any of that.

130F isn't a fantastic temperature, but it isn't something you have to worry about. Most people when talking about CPU temps do so in C, your processor probably shouldn't go above about 70C. Stuff like the Core2Duos you want to see 63 and below, but I've seen mine above that on its stock heatsink before and nothing bad happened.

I would be much less concerned about heat than about those clicks. Did you run one of those tests yet?

    Update:Now running at 140 idle. Update:Not harddrive's fault

Well, after running those diagnostic programs, and a few other things, I'm about 98.3 percent sure of what my problem is. Yesterday, l formatted the HDD and reinstalled xp. It works just fine, and is not the problem.

When i was formatting my HD it gave me some time to tear down my tower and dust it. So i dusted everything, cleaning it all up. I re arranged some wires so to hopefully help cool things off a bit. But, when I took off my heatsink to blow the dust out of it, i noticed something very odd. The middle spot on the bottom of the heatsink, which is where the thermal stuff goes, what almost totally uncovered.

A week ago my computer was running normal, 105-110 idle. Last night, before i quickly turned it off, my processor was checked at 146, idle, at one point. So, i'm pretty sure its either the whole heatsink, or just the fact that it didnt have the paste on it. In the heatsinks deffense, it s stock and 4 years old.

Would you all recommend getting a new heatsink, or just some new paste. The reason i ask is because all at the same time this week as the temp as started to rise, the fan on the heatsink has gotten louder. Could that be a sign that the heatsink is doomed?

The heatsink in itself doesn't really have any mechanical parts (apart from the fan) to be "doomed". Unless you can see that the fan isn't working, or unless it's making some form of a loud noise indicating a failing/failed bearing I would guess that it's fine.

Dust everything off the best that you can with compressed air, clean the thermal compound off the CPU's heat-spreader as well as the heatsink and apply some fresh compound.

Alright, I didn't know if it could wear out or anything. But Alright, and the fan is loud, so i will replace it. THanx

No problem. Kind of hard for them to wear out, they just sit there and collect dust. Unless you alter the physical dimensions of the heatsink it should work pretty much the same at all times (assuming it's kept clean).

Alright alright alright, one last thing. One thing i'm not sure of is how do you know how big your fan is? Probably a very stupid question, but I don't have a ruler that measures in mm's. Is that based on the size of your chip, or is up just up to you on which one you get?
  7. Matthew TechSpot Editor, Community Manager

It'd be easiest to just measure it. Measure it in inches and use an online conversion calculator such as this.

Thanx for all your help. I'll come back with an update later on.

    Update

I went and bought some silver thermal compound, and applied it to the heatsink. First cleaning off the heatsink and the heat spreader on the cpu. after letting it turn on and get warm, and then turning it off and letting it cool to room temp for about 2 days now it has really seemed to keep a little more cool. Idle use to be at 130, now its from 110 to 115. With a load it topped out at 140, now it's down to about 125. I'm still in need of a good fan, and i do believe i will go for a newer all copper heat sink. If anyone has any recomendations it needs to be
    socket 478, cooling a celeron d 2.5 ghz processor..

I have a side question, Would the Pentium 4 2.8 ghz ht p4 CPU work with the intel i845g chipset, d845gvsr5 model motherboard.

After reading through some of the other threads on this site i've found that the chip i mentioned wont work with the chip set i mentioned.

130F is only 54.4 Celsius, which is totally within the normal range for that board and CPU. I wouldn't worry until it is well over 65 Celsius.
You might want to clean your fan, and replace your thermal paste as a precaution.
