Solved Free Anti-Virus Program?

Hey guys, I hate to be a bother with this question, but I just got a brand new pc and I want to keep it clean. are there any anti-virus program out there that's actually free and actually works? or should I buckle down and just pay for one?

Note for Windows 8 users: Microsoft Security Essentials comes preinstalled and renamed as Windows Defender.
