Not sure how to do this... is that the yellow cable that runs from my PC to the talktalk router? If so, I've plugged the end that usually goes into the router into my netbook (this what I'm having the problems with) so the wire is going from the back of my PC into the side of my netbook, nothing in between- but I'm not sure if that's what you mean? LAN on this reads limited or no connectivity. Still connected wirelessly and tried a search which was still redirected. :(

The LAN cannot acquire a network address for some reason- "the network did not assign a network address to the computer."

This has happened randomly before on the PC but it's been okay lately... the PC doesn't have the redirecting problem either, just the netbook.

    Really weird :/

Got redirected from this site whilst editing this post!!! And again after it posted, also have the stupid 'congratulations' pop up telling me I've won free downloads from a catalogue. That is coming up pretty much every time I use this site now. Baffling!

What type of connection is it?
    Dial-up, cable, DSL, or satellite?
  5. lauralulu Newcomer, in training

It's a DSL connection with TalkTalk broadband.
  6. Broni Malware Annihilator

So you should have following connection:
    wall jack----->modem-----> router---->computer
    Correct?
  7. lauralulu Newcomer, in training

There is a plug going into the wall, a black cable from that leads to the router, a white cable goes into the router via the phone line and then a yellow cable (which I presume is the ethernet) goes from the router into the back of the computer. There's no external modem. The computer I'm having the problems with is the netbook which connects wirelessly with the router/network.

As well as redirects I am now also getting windows media player popping up with a random file, of course I never let it play but god knows how or why that also keeps happening.

Yeah, your DNS has been hijacked.
    This:
    DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 213.109.65.90
    is a Russian hijacking site.

The only way to get rid of it is to reset your router.
We tried it before, but you must be doing something wrong, since it didn't work first time around.

    Let's try again.

Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
    cmd
Click OK (in Vista and Windows 7, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
    ipconfig /flushdns
    ipconfig /registerdns
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew
    net stop "dns client"
    net start "dns client"

    Turn the computer off.

On your router, you'll find a pinhole marked "Reset".
Keep pushing the hole, using a pencil, or a paperclip until all lights briefly come off and on.
NOTE. Simple router disconnecting from a power source will NOT do.
Restart computer and check for redirections.

NOTE. You may need to re-check your router security settings, as described HERE

When done, re-run command from my reply #49.

Awesome! Glad you can see what's causing it. Just wondering, am I better off typing those instructions into the PC that's connected to the router, or will it have the same effect doing it on the netbook?
  13. Broni Malware Annihilator

I'm not sure, what you mean.
All actions have to be performed on the computer we've been trying to fix.
  14. lauralulu Newcomer, in training

FIXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXED! :D Not sure why it didn't work the first time, perhaps I missed out a command line, I reset the router the same way and this time when I turned my computer back on, I had to set up my connection again by typing in my username and password from talktalk on a special screen that came up automatically. Once connected, straight to google and NO MORE REDIRECTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Take that Russian hijacking site! woohoooo! Thank you soooooooooooo much for all the help. I'm thrilled to have my 'normal' computer back!!!! It will also really help with my studying, not getting re-directed all over the shop and battling pop up files etc.

So once again that you ever so much! I'm thrilled to bits! :)

Any advice on how to prevent this in future? I always thought my surfing was safe, being cautious at heart, so can't imagine how this happened and would like to take steps to ensure better security from now on!
  16. Broni Malware Annihilator

    Good news :)

Some advice listed below (step 11)...

    Your computer is clean [IMG]

    1. We need to reset system restore to prevent your computer from being accidentally reinfected by using some old restore point(s). We'll create fresh, clean restore point, using following OTL script:

    Run OTL

    • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following:

    Code:
    :OTL
    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [EMPTYFLASH]
    [CLEARALLRESTOREPOINTS]
    [Reboot]
    • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
    • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
    • Post resulting log.

    2. Now, we'll remove all tools, we used during our cleaning process

    Clean up with OTL:

    • Double-click OTL.exe to start the program.
    • Close all other programs apart from OTL as this step will require a reboot
    • On the OTL main screen, press the CLEANUP button
    • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

If you still have any tools or logs leftover on your computer you can go ahead and delete those off of your computer now.

    3. Make sure, Windows Updates are current.

    4. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

    5. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

    6. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

    7. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC) weekly.

    8. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

    9. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

    10. Run defrag at your convenience.

    11. Read How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic2520.html

    12. Please, let me know, how your computer is doing.

It's 'behaving' brilliantly, thanks. Everything smooth, searches are DIRECT and fast. Have downloaded what you recommended to clean up/keep things updated, and going to make a habit of running malware bites every week from now on. :)
