bookwyrm, may i respectfully confer on you the highest accolade an Englishman can bestow, you are clearly and beyond all doubt a thoroughly decent chap and i am honoured by your knind help, for which i am truly grateful, please forgive the little i's- i only have th one arm /hand left after my stroke so shift is out and i'm too lazy for caps lock

i did install flash but have no idea how to switch it on or off... am i right to think that google talk and google voice and video are not the same thing?

if google had a spare brain cell they could write a fix for error 1603 could they not? given how it seems to be a common problem

HUGE thanks

pete

am i right to think that google talk and google voice and video are not the same thing?

Since I did not have google anything until I added "voice and video", I believe that GoogleTalk is a/the component that makes V&V work.
Do you have anything in the above mentioned Folders?
In particular, was there anything in the CrashReports?

Let's see if we can get that permissions "Fix" working for you...
* If you are using Microsoft Windows XP, verify that the Group or user names box contains the SYSTEM user account.

After I enabled the Security tab on my system, I found that there was a "user account" called "SYSTEM", so I did not need the next step...
If the SYSTEM user account does not appear in the box, follow these steps to add the SYSTEM account to the box:
1. Click Add. The Select Users or Groups dialog box appears.
2. In the Name field, click SYSTEM, and then click Add.
3. Click OK.
Do the above if your Groups or User Names section does not include "System". If/when it does...
In the Permissions section, click to select the Full Control check box under Allow, and then click Advanced.
# Do the following:
* If you are using Windows XP, in the dialog box that appears, click to select the Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects check box for the SYSTEM account, and then click OK.
Your dialog box may have instead a dropdown menu next to "Apply onto:". Here you should select "This Folder, Subfolders and files"
All the options should have the "Allow" box "Ticked" (or "Checked").
Then continue with the directions: This should allow adequate permissions for your installation to proceed...
unless permissions was not the issue to begin with.
Note If you receive a security message, click Yes.
# Wait for the operating system to apply the permissions that you have selected to all child folders.
# Run the Windows Installer package.

As for the way I am staying with this... I just don't like to get stumped/thwarted. I want to see your issue fixed! That's me.
re:

One of the threads I read did say that their coding department was working on a fix.

sadly i'm to ignorant to understand what is it the boxes in the security tab so i don't understand what i am adding or what should be there, the absence of an OK is a poser for me

thanks

pete

I have attached an image file that shows what the securities tab should look like.
With "System" highlighted, the boxes should all be checked
except for the last one, which you must scroll down to see. It should be grey.
If you change any of the check boxes, the Apply button will become enabled, and you can click it.
When you are done, you should then click the "Okay" button.

thank you so very much for this kind help

all the boxes are now ticked

how do I turn flash off/on?

thank you so, so much, I found a thing that switches flash off and to be extra safe I installed it again
however, despite switching flash off and having every thing ticked and turning Kaspersky off, I still get error 1603

I think I'm cursed or stupid or both

maybe I still have the tail end of an earlier and partial installation of google voice and video
how do i find out if this is so and take the necessary steps to rectify it?

best

Hi Pete
Sorry to have been away so long... a hectic week for me.
And at this point it will be Monday before I can provide further substantive help.
I just wanted to let you know I had not forgotten (or abandoned) you.
I still hope to see this issue sorted out.

my dear and most excellent kind friend, i hugely appreciate your interest in my problem, but not to worry i have had to learn patience in my long life, so please take your time

best

pete

i'd like to say how much i appreciate both of your interest in my problem and to thank you for it

one thing i have done is to create lots of space on my HD by cutting and pasting a lot of stuff to a 17gig thumb stick

i saw i should uninstall gtalk but every time i try it comes up with some stufff i just can't understand- moreover i don't see what google talk has to do with google voice and video which as i understand itis a functionof gmail. i feel sure i have not got the permissions stuff right as i have no conceptual basis for what i am trying to do

logic tells me there must be some magic difference between my laptop and my big pc on which google voice and video went on like a dream. one trouble is whoever writes on that link that you so kindly provided speaks a language unknown to me. Since it is plainly a common problem you'd think google would come up with a fix for dummies like me who don't understand anorak
