Hard drive locks up system?

Hi, I bought a WD 320GB 2.5 Internal SATA hard drive to add to my laptop. I did not set up any RAID configurations or anything like this, I simply had a 2nd bay in the laptop and plugged it in. My problem is that it randomly will freeze up my OS (Vista) for about 1-2 seconds. It's definitely the hard drive because if I disable in Device Manager, the random lockups stop entirely. Mouse is not movable, movies or games will stutter. Although, it seems like if the video I am watching is stored on the extra drive, there is no stuttering. Any idea why this is happening and what I can do to fix it? I'm new to the hardware scene, mostly a software guy :stickout:

Well......

Sounds like to me is your HDD is spinning down to save energy. My External HDD is set to stop after 5 mins. When its not being used for a while and i go to something that is on it it will "freeze" my whole system till it starts up again. What os are you using?
