Do you have Office installed at all?

    Any error messages?

    office

yes, full suite and no error messages. I think I am all the way through your final set of instructions. Installing PSI right now. The computer sounds much better, there are no redirects happening and no alerts on reboot or anything.

Ran PSI and it said there was still a problem with Adobe Reader. I guess the update I did earlier was a fail. This time it went through the right motions but I got an error message. The install finished and it looks ok.

error 1402. Could not open key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents\MSFS.
Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.

Also, it would appear that I didn't do a good job removing the older versions of Adobe Reader. I have 6.0, 7.0.5, and 8.0. I tried removing 7 because it actually shows up in the PSI scan and its saying it cannot run a uninstaller because the source is not there. Thoughts? I checked program files and the installer is there and the source files exist.

um, lets see. In the system tray the yellow shield came up and said that windows had updates to install. I right clicked on that and it asked for custom install or express install. I pressed express because it was recommended. It went through its processes and you can see it running updates on different programs and the os. It got to what looked like a completed state and then finished and popped up the alert that those particular programs would not allow for updates.

installed revo uninstaller. This piece of software is interesting. It also couldn't run an unistall but it then ran a scan of unistall remnants and there is a whole list of stuff for Adobe 7.0 and some of it is in the registry. Can I delete this stuff or....

Registry entries can be left alone.

    As for updates...

In this forum, we make sure, your computer is free of malware and your computer is clean :)
Because the access to malware forum is very limited, your best option is to create new topic about your current issue, at Windows section.
    You'll get more attention.

    Any other issues?

nope. I think you have got me where I wanted to be. Thanks for all your help. I might come back in the future with other computers that are beyond my expertise. Thanks again.
