  1. hello,
    guys i am an absolute newbie in overclocking.who just know what overclocking do.i have a very antique pc running p4 2.4 Ghz and since i donot afford to buy a new one till i pass out my college i would like to overclock it.And for that i need your help.please just guide me through the whole process.i am proving log generated by CPU-z below.

    sorry to late reply , but it take me a long time to do a lot of researches to give you the most accurate answer.
    1- ( cpu overclocking) : i don't Recommend you to overclock your cpu because this will ruin your processor or your notherboard or maybe both , and i will tell why
    first : your CPU is 90nm technology , this mean that it produces a lot of heat
    second : your motherboard is too old and not designed for overclocking
    third : i guess you are using stock cooling for your cpu.
    fourth: to be honest with you , overclocking your cpu will not give a sensible impact , because you have an old ram (DDR 200mhz) and an IGP (64mb).
    2-(low end graphics card) : Unfortunately you can't add a graphics card because your motherboard does not have a pci express slot.

    I OC'd a 2.4 Northwood P4 500MHz to 2.9GHz or something. I dont quite remember but the picture is in the TS Photo gallery somewhere. It was on the stock heatsink /w a 92mm fan ziptied on top of it. Dont raise the voltage and it wont fry so long as it doesnt over heat. You need to get a program like Asus Probe or Motherboard Moniter that'll show you the temp of the CPU in Windows so you can see what it maxes out at under load. You need to enter the BIOS when the computer is booting, it'll be the DEL key, F1, F2, or something like that. When you first turn on the computer thats the time u press the key and it'll say it on the bottom left hand corner of the screen "X key to enter BIOS or CMOS". Go in there and raise the front side bus (FSB). This will OC your memory, cpu, and northbridge (motherboard communications). If the components are on your side and stay happy (working), and tempretures dont shut you down, you can get some speed. They run hot, they dont die til 73*C or so. Anything above 70*C is bad juju. You have a Prescott P4 which was the last kind of Pentium 4, its the latest model/rendition. The Northwoods were highly praised for overclocking. You should be able to get some juice out of it to 2.8 or 3.0GHz if your memory doesnt hold you up. Typically people put faster memory in that way the RAM is initially underclocked, then when the CPU is OC'd its /w the memory still underclocked or sitting at stock speeds, that way it doesnt hinder you from reaching your CPU's max OC potential.

    No you increase the FSB multiplier which in turn speeds the memory because the FSB is the northbridge/memory/cpu interface speed. Their clocks x the FSB = overall speed, and if the motherboard doesnt change your memory divider setting to a slower speed (so it posts, boots) then you will see speed increase.

    i explored my bios.but couldnt see a option for FSB.any other is used for FSB then i dont know.sorry if i am too much noob :(

    Has to be a home made computer. Retail machines wont give you the option - they want you to buy a new one ;)

    Yeah you really don't want to try. First off, you have a retail OEM machine, and you CAN'T, second, it's just not worth it for the extra heat + power consumption a prescott processor will put out for marginal improvements. It's better to just save up whatever money you can get to put together a budget machine as suggested by skystar, and keep your existing monitor + keyboard + mouse for increased savings.

    For the components skystar suggested, I'd say a 350-400W power supply would be all you need, which will be around $30 to $40. As far as a case goes, to be honest, you could go cheap on this since your components are far from high end, and won't consume much power, and therefore won't run particularly hot. You can get a perfectly decent case for around $40 - $60,a few I would recommend:

    1) Rosewill CHALLENGER = around $45-$50
    2) NZXT Gamma = around $40-$50
    3) Cooler Master Elite 430 = around $45-$50
    4) Antec 200 S = around $55

    Just look around for a case you like, you shouldn't have to spend more than the suggested $50 or so for a perfectly decent case. Remember for this custom build, you can also recycle existing components from your current machine, such as hard drives/disc drives (if they're SATA, if they're IDE, the motherboard skystar suggested has these), and even fans. Just make sure to ask for help on anything you're not sure on, and we'll try to help to meet your needs.

    I have to wonder if you could find the OEM identical board and flash the BIOS to its revision. If they were identical boards I would think that'd work. Im sure people have done it before if you googled the subject matter.

    hi,

    Thankyou guys for all that help.i started saving up for a new budget pc :).my pc was old enough it even had glitches with xp sp3 :(.for time being i had to convert to linux xubuntu..its very light on resources.i have a custom built machine but may be the motherboard i got is from branded ones.once my mother board was burned up then i got a 2nd hand from my uncle.
