What is with all these Dell password problems? Does the laptop shut down automatically using passwords when the original owners give them up? I know HP is using a thumbprint reader as a security feature now

So if I buy a new Dell computer, I'll have to purchase a password separately in addition to the computer?

Ok, I understand. I just trashed an old Dell XPS that had a bios password set... These people that set a bios or hard drive password, then loose it, are quite stupid! I tell all my customers to never set a bios or hard drive password ever. I find out that it's the "knowledgeable" teenagers that most often set these passwords, then forget them

    Straight from Dell:

    "Tmagic,

There are a few options in this case. First option, contact the seller of the system and ask for the password. These are usually user set passwords that help protect restricted information and access to restricted networks and they may not have realized that they shipped the system with sensitive information. They also may have just forgotten to remove the password.

Second option; if the seller can’t provide the password, ask them to contact Dell and verify the information. Then provide the code that appears on the screen and then pass the information on to the customer to unlock the hard drive. Given that they sold the system this shouldn’t be too much trouble if they can’t provide the password.

Third option; the hard drive would have to be formatted and the OS reinstalled. I have, however, heard of cases where this HDD password will not allow the sectors on the drive to be formatted. In this case the only option left is to replace the hard drive (which I would take up with the seller.)

    Mike

If you people can't do any of these options, what else is one to think, other than the Dell was stolen or aquired in a less than honest manner

You could try contacting Dell Support and tell them what you said here, or change out the hard drive with a new one

i can't stand the way that TS has turned into a place for people to get their dell's unlocked

surely there must be a specialist website somewhere?

fair enough that it's to do with technology and computers, but there must be hundreds of new members signing up and posting their information and not getting a reply or never even visiting the site again

    this frustrates me somewhat :(
