Inactive Help with virus removal - IE and Safari won't connect to Internet anymore

Status
Not open for further replies.
initial symptoms were google redirect issues in IE and Safari. Ran a total PC scan with my McAffee and it found nothing. I downloaded AVG and it is running in trial mode, did a full scan and found 3 trojans listed as:
generic 23.CCFE
win32/heur
agent_r.ALE

Once the viruses were quarantined by AVG then IE and Safari stopped working, won't connect to internet. Safari states "problem communicating with the web proxy server (CFURLErrorDomain:306)"

Ran scans in the very helpful thread and here are the logs (GMER found nothing):

Welcome to TechSpot! Hopefully we can get you back online.

First, please rake these out of the Trusted Zone. The 2nd one is especially bad to have there. Security is lower in that zone and in spite of what you may have been told nothing needs to be in the Trusted Zone! That is only a marketing tool from a site so they can get junk email into your system:
Trusted Zone: csx.com\apps
Trusted Zone: travelocitymastercard.com

Open Internet Options through either Tools in IE or the Control Panel> Security tab> Trusted Sites> Sites> look for csx.com and travelocitymastercard.com> highlight and remove each> The click on Apply> OK.

Good! Might have been something in one of the files removed in Combofix.

Tell me please whether you plan to put AVG back on the system and remove McAfee, or the other way around. There are entries for both and I can remove those from the AV programs you don't plan to keep.

There is another log from DDS named Attach.txt. Please find it and paste it in your next reply. Do not zip it

Does your ISP require you to use a proxy server? uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:50626 I think Cox does to use Firefox.

Attach.txt

I have uninstalled AVG per your instructions. Can you make a recommendation on AV protection? I have had McAfee installed and updated this whole time, and obvoiusly it didn't catch the viruses I had. AVG did, but I was only running the free 30 trial version. What do you suggest?

Does your ISP require you to use a proxy server?
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:50626
================================
Here are some tips for security- it's more than just an AV program:
Tips for added security and safer browsing: (Links are in Bold Blue)
  1. Browser Security
[o] Safe Settings (Please ignore the suggestion to use the Registry Editior in this section "Creating a Custom Security Zone")
[o] ZonedOut. This manages the Zones in Internet Explorer. (For IE7 and IE8, Windows 2000 thru Vista. No Windows 7)
    [o] Replace the Host Files
[o] Google Toolbar Pop Up Blocker
[o]Web of Trust (WOT) Site Advisor. Traffic-light rating symbols show which rate the site for Trustworthiness, Vendor Reliability, Privacy, Child Safety.
  2. Have layered Security:
[o]Antivirus :(only one):Both of the following programs are free and known to be good:
    [o]Avira-AntiVir-Personal-Free-Antivirus
    [o] [o]Avast-Free Antivirus
[o]Firewall (only one): Use bi-directional firewall. Both of the following programs are free and known to be good:
    [o]Comodo
    [o]Zone Alarm
  3. Antimalware: I recommend all of the following:
[o]Spywareblaster: SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX.
    [o]Spybot Search & Destroy
  4. Updates: Stay current:
[o] the Microsoft Download Sitefrequently. All updates marked Critical and the current SP updates.
[o]Adobe Reader Install current, uninstall old.
[o]Java Updates Install current, uninstall old.
  5. Tracking Cookies
    Reset Cookie:
[o]For Internet Explorer: Internet Options (through Tools or Control Panel) Privacy tab> Advanced button> check 'override automatic Cookie handling'> check 'accept first party Cookies'> check 'Block third party Cookies'> check 'allow per session Cookies'> Apply> OK.
[o]For Firefox: Tools> Options> Privacy> Cookies> check ‘accept Cookies from Sites’> Uncheck 'accept third party Cookies'> Set Keep until 'they expire'. This will allow you to keep Cookies for registered sites and prevent or remove others. (Note: for Firefox v3.5, after Privacy click on 'use custom settings for History.')
I suggest using the following two add-on for Firefox. They will prevent the Tracking Cookies that come from ads and banners and other sources:
    AdBlock Plus
    Easy List
[o]For Chrome: Tools> Options> Under The Hood> Privacy Section> CHECK 'Restrict how third party Cookies can be used'> Close.
  6. Do regular Maintenance
Clean the temporary internet files often:
    [o] ATF Cleaner by Atribune
  7. Restore Points:
    [o]See System Restore Guide
  8. Safe Email Handling
[o] Don't open email from anyone you don't know.
[o] Don't open Attachments in the email. Safe to your desktop and scan for viruses using a right click
[o] Don't leave your personal email address on the internet. Have a separate email account at one of the free web-based emails like Yahoo.
Please let me know if you find any bad link.
=============================================
I don't use 'suites'. My security is all freestanding. IF you don't mind paying for an AV program, I recommend Nod32 from Eset. This is on the computer, not the online scan we run.

Trojans and rootkits are not having any problem getting by just an AV! Let me know what you decide because there are processes on your system for both McAfee and AVG.

Proxy

Thank you for the tips. I will start going through them now.
My provider doesn't require the proxy, don't know how it got there. Is it McAfee firewall setting that? What should I do, remove it? How? I don't see it in the IE settings....

Reset your browser proxies
  • For Firefox:
o Open Firefox, click on "Tools" then "Options" and then on "Advanced".
o Click on the "Network" tab, and then on the "Settings" button.
o Please make sure that the "No Proxy" option is selected.
  • For Internet Explorer:
    o Open Internet Explorer.
o Click on "Tools" and then select "Internet Options".
o Click on the "Connections" tab and click the "Lan Settings" button at the bottom.
o Uncheck "Use a Proxy server for your LAN".
o Click Ok to close the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings window.
o Click Ok to close the Internet Options window.
