I was trying to use Disk Defragmenter & I get the following error, "Disk Defragmenter could not start." when I try to defrag my hard drivers & I get this error, so why is this happening & how do I fix it?

I personally use that slowpoke.
Get a better third party defragger. Some good ones are UltimateDefrag and IObit defrag

How To Fix Defrag (IN BRIEF)

Run these commands:
regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll
regsvr32 dfrgui.dll
From Command Prompt in directory c:\windows\system32>

Start->Run-> services.msc
Make sure "DCOM server process launcher" and "logical disk manager"
services are on automatic and running!

find this file:
C:\windows\inf\dfrg.inf
right-click on it and select "install".

Still Not Working?

set the memory paging file to 1.5X mem
Try:- regsvr32 atl.dll
try CHKDSK
Open My Comp
right click on harddrive
properties - tools - Check Now - Automatically Fix
OK

Please confirm "DCOM Server Process Launcher" is stated in Services and in Automatic
Start->Run-> Services.msc

Also run this: regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\dfrgsnap.dll

Uninstall diskeeper if installed

Otherwise download Malwarebytes ; Update it; then run a full scan (remove all found Malwares)
You need to run this multiple times, until all hidden Malwares are uncovered and removed

well DCOM Server Process Launcher is started & set in automatic. Also I install Smart Defrag & no problems so far so thanks.

I thought you were trying to get Windows Defrag to work?
Is it working now? Or are you now resolved to Smart Defrag?

ok thanks for the update :grinthumb
It would have been nice to find out Windows defrag worked with the above, but you would need to now uninstall any 3rd party defrag utilities

ok thanks for your help kimsland I will take care of that, so my problem with Windows Defrag is fine now because I reinstall WINXP Home SP3, so it fine now.
