What you have is a cdrom disk image of CD1 for Sim City 4.

To get this to work you can either use a virtual disk drive software such as 'Deamon Tools' as mentioned in a previous post on this thread, or you can record the image file onto a CD and then install normally. Note that you do not copy the .bin file to a cd, but you open the image file with the burning software and record the image contents to a CD. In order to do this you need CD burning software that can recognise the .bin file format, or you can convert the .bin file to a standard .iso file using a tool such as WinISO or ISOBuster, and then record the .iso image contents to a CD. ISO files are recognised by nearly all CD burning software.

But Sim City 4 comes on 2 CD's so you may still not be able to install without the second CD.

    Hope this helps.:grinthumb

This a getting into a grey area so maybe it is time someone stresses that Techspot does not promote nor condone piracy. This discussion is meant for making backups of discs you own.

What I find funny sometimes is when games come with an integrated copy-protection & later on the company removes it with a patch when they realise that the protection makes the game run slower or that some CDRoms are uncapable or installing the game because of it.

It has happened with Neverwinter Nights, Morrowind & even GTA3.

Don't worry StormBringer, the Sim City I was referring to was my own copy. I got my brother to make a .bin image of both SC4 CDs as I was going to lend the game to a friend, (if this is illegal, so be it) and surely enough, my friend scratched the darn CD1! Which made the game almost impossible to play with out skips in the music. So I figured since I had the images, I might as well use them. Take a note that CD2 had not been damaged, which is why I had asked for help with CD1. My brother could not help me in this matter as he was away camping with his Honda Hornet buddies.

If it looked like I was pointing fingers or anything, I'm sorry. I didn't mean it to be that way. I just thought as big as this discussion was becoming, it might be a good idea to point it out.

Your situation is actually a very good example of reasons to make backups and why we need to prevent companies from making it more difficult to do so.

No need to apologize, I could see how this discussion could get us into some unnecessary trouble.

    Help !

I want to back up my games so that scratched CDs do not make my life miserable. I can convert the CD's to ISO images, but after that i dont know wh8 to do with them. Should i burn them directly to a cd using a CD burning software such as Roxioo or should i first extract the ISO image and then burn the files onto the CD ? CAn roxioo handle all this for me ?

    Thank you,

Most cd-burning apps have CD copying, it's simpler than making an image manually and burning it.

You burn the image directly to CD.

And it probably won't work properly because new games come with really sneaky CD copy protection schemes. You'd have to go and get some no-CD patches.. and I'll just shut up now :p

it'll work.. What you do is once you have your ISO, open Nero and goto File, then Burn Image. Browse to the ISO and it'll burn.

If I were you I'd do it this way, the sort-of longer way (RIP ISO>Burn ISO), because you'll probably run into less issues due to cd protection, etc.

Sim City 4 requires to insert the 2nd CD when installing, is there anyway to do it without the need to burn the bin files to CDs?

You can insert your original SimCity CD, not the "backup" you made in .cue/.bin form..

when using deamon tools, when it askes for the second cd, mount the second cds image in the place of the first image.

do i have to use daemon tools? cause i was using ISObuster, I extracted CD 1 to c:\SIMCITY. After it asked me to insert disk 2, I extracted CD 2 (.bin w/ .cue) on top of c:\SIMCITY(notice that I cant delete that directory beforehand because the installation was running). However when I press "ok" in the dialog box it just kept popping up to ask me insert disc 2

oops thanks for the info, I installed daemon tools and now I know what you mean by mounting image. It worked!

Well, you can just use a cd fix if you want to avoid having to insert the proper disk.
