iPhone XR generates little excitement, but that doesn't mean it won't sell well

The big picture: The iPhone XR offers better value than its big brothers, the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, however as it's often been the history with Apple's non-flagship products, the XR has failed to generate the excitement that iPhone releases are known for: it’s received the shortest lines outside Apple stores in Apple history. Even Apple doesn’t seem enthusiastic enough to launch any cases with the phone in the US.

As Apple stores opened around the world yesterday morning, eager fans lined up to buy the newest iPhone. Just not many of them. At Convent Garden, one of Apple’s two stores in London, only 30 people were waiting as the doors opened. At San Francisco’s Union Square, only 25 were waiting – and the first person in line was only first because they’d thought the shop was opening at 7 rather than 8. Interviewed by Cnet, he describes himself as an “Android guy” and revealed that he was actually only buying iPhones for his wife and sister.

The normally bustling New York store on Fifth Avenue saw the largest turnout of the XR launch, stretching about a block away from the store. Mark Guliaiev, a Ukranian student, was first in line and had been waiting since 2 am to buy a yellow XR for his parents. “I just wanted to be number one, simple as that.” He needn’t have waited so long, however, as second-in-line had only been waiting an hour. At the Sydney store in Australia, the first person in line had only been waiting for half an hour. She was buying the phone for her husband and admitted that arriving early had been “a bit of an overkill.”

It was widely expected that the XR would generate less hype because of its sub-1080p 1792 x 828 non-OLED display – but compared to the eight hours most people spent lining up for the XS launch just a month ago, it is impressively quiet. According to analyst Gene Munster from Loup Ventures, however, that isn’t indicative of sales.

"Apple's most loyal user base will buy the newest, largest, most expensive models without even seeing the devices," he said in a report. "The average consumer will make a more rational buying decision, which is where the iPhone XR wins." He is expecting the XR to comprise 38% of Apple’s 2019 iPhone sales, compared to 12% for the XS Max and 9% for the XS.

Apple's marketing of the XR has been colorful and lively, rather than sleek and premium like their XS advertising. This has contributed to a second-class perspective, Munster says, but he insists that that perspective will wear off due to the highly positive reviews the device has been receiving.

Renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo agrees and suggests that many XR customers will prefer to purchase the phone with a carrier due to the various perks and discounts they offer. The fact that XR customers are a less excited demographic than XS customers also appears to be a reason for the low turnout.

That hasn’t stopped iFixit from digging into the bowels of the phone to see what it’s made of. They’ve described the phone as a “spiritual iPhone 9” due to the fact that it houses many of the more advanced technologies from the X but also uses many older technologies from the iPhone 8 Plus. For example, it has the FaceID and design from the X but has slightly larger bezels due to using LCD screen technology. It also has a rectangular shaped battery rather than the L-shaped one in other X models, and though it’s smaller than the 8 Plus’, it has a larger capacity.

iFixit gave the phone a 6/10 repairability score, the same as what the XS and XS Max received. Like those two phones, they praised the easy access to the battery and easy display removal, which they call as “painless as it gets on a water-resistant phone.” Unfortunately, the water-resistance does make other repairs harder, and having a glass front and back makes the phone less durable. Repair costs will be slightly cheaper on the XR than on the XS models.

Speaking of durability, JerryRigEverything clearly enjoyed attacking his orange XR on YouTube. While it uses an aluminum frame rather than the stainless steel one found on the XS, it’s still impressively resistant to bending. The earpiece is also very tough, while the front and rear glass are pretty standard, both scratching slightly at a six on Moh’s hardness scale. But despite being relatively durable, JerryRigEverything did not approve of the phone as a whole.

“It’s pretty messed up that with Apple, you don’t get what you pay for on so many levels… It’s like [they're] robbing an old folk home.”

His main gripe was with the screen, which he described as being very backwards thinking and unnecessary when much cheaper phones have higher resolution screens. Maybe don’t watch the video if you’re a fan of Apple, you might have your feelings hurt. Despite himself, he still had to conclude that “our little orange friend is built like a solid low-resolution brick.”

In all likelihood, you’re not excited by the launch of the iPhone XR. But regardless of whether you are or aren’t, the phone is an outstanding choice of iPhone for everyone who prefers Apple over Android and are willing to forgo some of the necessary premium involved in that decision.

A very spirited defense of the Xr's screen was posted on Youtube by Rene Ritchie. Apple fans will love that video.

Now, I'm going to watch that JerryRigEverything video on the Xr. That guy is funny,

People who are used to Apple products really have no alternative so even if you think the latest iPhone is trash but you always used Apple ecosystem and don't wanna bother switiching the only thing there is for is the iPhone. You don't have to have the latest one contrary to what Apple users believe but what's the point of an iPhone if you have the old version?

And...they are called sheeple.

"Apple's most loyal user base will buy the newest, largest, most expensive models without even seeing the devices,"

H8ers gonna h8.

Not just Apple specifically, if you buy any product from any company without knowing anything about it then you are a sheep. Fanboys exist for all kind of products and they are all bad. Apple fanboyism is bit more common so it is criticised more.

Apple = Money
iPhone = Money
etc..
These phone shouldn't break so easy as you pay for what the name Apple is.I have to watch it with my iPad 5th Gen treat it like a newborn. Working behind the Apple Care service desk and the calls coming in for all sorts of things at Apple. I glad I am not there no more and I rather skip to the next job. They have people who have no clue how to use their I-devices. I don't mine helping them but some people try to get around apple as you say eco-system - pay money, pay for it service. 6/10 in repair that's pity full or such a company. iPhone should be called iPhone Oops Smart Cell phone.

People will complain about Apple and the people that buy there devices. The one thing they do well is support them. The Iphone 5s is still getting software updates, it came out in 2013. No Android device today gets official support for that long. Your lucky to get 2 years for Android and you can only say that because most manufacturers release an update 3-6 months after its released. Not even communities like XDA support a device that long. Google's flagship Pixel phones only get software updates for 3 years at max.

And most people in this world are not very tech savy. So IOS works well for them. Since its pretty much just an app drawer. I do personally like android better for customization. But some apps on Iphones just run so much better.

This is coming from someone who has a pixel 2 xl. I've had iphones in the past (women love to facetime and imessage).

Heh... I got a Xr for my mom to replace an old 5s. I get to play with the phone for a few weeks before I give it to her (not in the same timezone) but so far, don't see the need to upgrade from my iPhone 7Plus which I got it as a free upgrade thanks to T-Mobile (I turned in an iPhone 6 and paid $200 to get the 7Plus 128gb... I could have gotten an iPhone 7 without the memory upgrade by paying just the taxes).

In all honesty, I still prefer this iPhone 7 over the samsung GS9plus and the One Plus 3 that I have around to test and play around. The GS9plus does have a beautiful screen but the GUI is blah. The One Plus 3 is getting a little old in age and their oxygen os is so so (it is android base after all). I don't own any macs and built my pcs for the last 20 years... but iPhone just works and that's one of two things I ask for my phone (the other being a nice camera phone).

Still rockin' my 5s from Jan 2014.

Now if only Apple would release a similar format again. I'd like to have a phone that still fits in my hand and my pocket.

People who claim that people who buy Apple products are “sheeple” and label them as stupid etc are usually the most obnoxious and misinformed people in the tech community.

this is a claim for knowledge, how do you KNOW this actually? You must actually know everyone in the tech community, you assert that 'its most' so you have evaluated ever single person in the tech community and determined that well over 50% are 'obnoxious and misinformed' (meaning also by implication that you are 'well informed' enough to make this determination) and now after all this effort thanks for sharing your facts.

Nope, don't "hate" Apple any more than I "hate" Samsung. The thing that gets me is people continue to put up with the inflated prices for both of those to manufacturers year after year. The latest on Apple, from last year was a 63%!

Some apple phones are worth their features, store app learning curve and price tags that comes with it is just not worth it.
Right before I moved my mother onto android 2 years ago.
I asked her did she want apple iphone or android ?

"considering she spend hours on a ipad 2 her work place gave her for work"
She said buy me an android, apple apps, services and prices for everything is not worth it.
Some time later she is still using her samsung galaxy phone like its going out of style.
So there you have it folks. =/

An iPad 2. Seven and a half year old technology. And comparing 2 different products, a tablet and a phone.

You need a new anecdote.

Yup, it's the customer who sets the price and apparently enough people think these bloody expensive devices are worth it. No harm in that.

It just seems like a lot of sour grapes from everyone who complains about pricing. "Other people will pay and I don't want to. So I'll call them and the company names."

Don't want to pay? Fine, last years and earlier flagship models or this years downmarket models are for you. Or someone else's who doesn't sell an ultra-premium model.

I guess it must just be fun to make fun of people with AMGs when you have a Camry budget.

Spot on. Everyone has a different budget and right now there are an awful lot of people out there who can comfortably afford the higher prices these tech companies are charging for their products. The market exists and the prices are not going to come down again. People need to get over it.

Exactly!
I have nothing against Apple or Samsung. In fact, my 2nd smartphone was the original Galaxy Note. After that, I switched to the cheaper Huawei Mate phones.
I just don't get the keep up with the Jones' mentality. I just don't get it. But, it aint' MY money, so they can choose what they think they want.
I know when the SUV craze stared in the late 90's, people asked me when I was getting one (my dad was just about to retire after 33 years of a car salesman). I said I wasn't. They would ask what are you doing to buy? I said another Mustang. What? You've already had 3. I said yeah, and this will be #4. But why would you want a Mustang? Everyone is buying SUV's. Ummmm...because that is what I want?

Its not my problem I told her to accept the free upgrade offer on the ipad her job was offering.
She refused to listen to them about it and me, I don't reason or work well with brick walls.
Thats her lost altogether however she really did like apple until she compared it to newer android devices side by side.
