low FPS in Quake3

  1. I have a Geforce4 Ti 4200 128ddr on a XP2600 system
and at 800X600 with a Vert. Refresh rate of 100MHz
my Q3 Arena FPS tops out at 98fps....
this is very low and no matter what I change on
the display settings, it does not change. (up or down)
So I was wondering what could be the limiting factor?
Is there some kind of "Max FPS" setting that I dont know about?

I have Vert sync disabled in the game and the driver settings.

Dude even 90fps is not bad. Is that even registerable by the human eye? 280fps definately isn't.

Oh btw, if your getting 280fps at 800x600, then I would just go ahead and move up to 1024x768. A waste of speed :).

It's not really the FPS that you can see that’s important... it's the
amount that the game can produce that counts i.e.
I can do more damage to an enemy with 10 frames worth of a
super shotgun blast that lasts one second than with only 5.
while it's true that the human eye can't see better than about 45
FPS at best and that a lot of “High Ping Only” servers are capped
at about 80 - 100 FPS there are those out there that don't cap
FPS and it's there that all that hard earned money that you
wasted on that rig of yours pays off. ..... or during single player

Yes but the crappy monitor I'm using right now has a vertical refresh rate cap of 85MHz at 1024X768 but can manage 100
at 800X600.... it just makes the game look a lot smoother.
I know it doesnt look as good though :-(

A higher possible Frame rate even effects how far you can jump.
Ever wonder how some guys find it so easy to jump up to all
those "hard to reach" places? and manage to kill you with a single
super shotgun blast? not all of them are Bots....
Go over here, this site has some info on the max FPS and the
results it has on your game:

Go to your Q3/baseq3 Directory and edit your Q3config.cfg file,
    use note or word pad.
    Then scan for this line:
    seta com_maxfps "85"

I cant remember the exact number that is in there... I think it's
85 but anyway just bump it up to 999, that will remove the
max limit and you'll see your true FPS

I have set mine back to 150..I got a better "looking" game. I cant
explain it but the graphics suffered a bit at 999.
