OK I now have a (copy) vista ultimate dvd

Booting up from CD.... - went through the motions of repairing. No difference when finished - it went to normal start-up and this still gets a flash of blue screen (too quick to read) and restarts.
Will still start in safemode. When I try full vista re-install, it doesn't get far before cancelling installation - 'windows cannot install required files - make sure required files are available and restart installation.'

Still set to boot from cd - restart now tries to start windows normally rather than show option to repair.

At this point, I suggest you start new topic in Windows forum.

We're not dealing with any infection anymore.

Good luck :)

OK thanks for your help through this.
I think that my copy vista dvd may be a dud. Will keep trying when I can get access to another.

Just a quick update =
Downloaded a vista iso & reinstalled OK.
Sorted all drivers etc
Now working great. Even saved all documents before reinstall so hardly anything lost!!

Sorry, I know its less than 100% legit & somewhat risky but...... got the job done!
If manfacturer (acer) didn't skimp and supplied proper vista dvd instead of HD recovery files then I wouldn't have needed to do this.

Besides, how is this worse than 'borrowing' vista dvd as you suggested?.
