Ran malwarebytes twice and removed found files. Needed to run unhide.exe to see files. Computer seems to work now, but could you check the log files below to see if anything else needs to be corrected?

Thanx!!!!

Code:
KillAll::
File::

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Media Player:

To remove Viewpoint Media Player

Boot into Safe Mode
  • Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard.
  • Select the Safe Mode option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
  • Click on Start > Run> type: services.msc> Enter
  • Click the Extended tab.
  • Scroll down to Viewpoint Manager Service
  • Double-click to open> Properties> General tab.
  • Click the Stop button.
  • Change the Startup Type to Disabled.
  • Click> Apply> OK. Exit Services.
  • Click on Start > Settings > Control Panel >Add/Remove Programs
  • Highlight and remove all references to Viewpoint - i.e. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player.

Use Windows Explorer> Right click on Start> Explore> My Computer> Double click on Local Drive (C)> Programs> Do a right click> Delete on each of the following
C:\Program Files\ViewManager\ <-- and delete this folder
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\ <-- and delete this folder

Empty the Recycle Bin
==========================================
How is the system running now?

After running CFScript and remove Viewpoint mgr

Ran ComboFix with CFScript as instructed, logfile shown below. One exception was that it asked to update ComboFix, which I responded "Yes". Hope the script ran as expected?

Regarding Viewpoint, it was not listed in the services list. The C:\Program Files/ViewManager folder did not exist on the computer, but I did delete the C:\Program FIles\Viewpoint folder.

Computer is working great now.

The enjoyment you get in helping un-nerds like us is nowhere near the enjoyment I have experienced in getting rid of the virus!!! THANX!

I absolutely love this!
The enjoyment you get in helping un-nerds like us is nowhere near the enjoyment I have experienced in getting rid of the virus!!! THANX!

You are very welcome! You said that very well- once in a while I get close to burn out and think maybe I should stop helping out here. But so far, I come back to the fact that I do enjoy the process. I try to make it a learning process so the person I am helping will come away with a bit more knowledge,

I'd like you to run a quick HijackThis just to make sure all the bad entries have been removed:
Download HijackThis http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HijackThis.zipand save to your desktop.
  • Extract it to a directory on your hard drive called c:\HijackThis.
  • Then navigate to that directory and double-click on the hijackthis.exe file.
  • When started click on the Scan button and then the Save Log button to create a log of your information.
  • The log file and then the log will open in notepad. Be sure to click on Format> Uncheck Word Wrap when you open Notepad
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and paste (Ctrl+V) the log in your next reply.

NOTE: Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I'll check the log, have you remove any entries if needed, then we'll remove the cleaning tools.

After running Hijackthis

Yes - I know the feeling. I too am volunteering my time on this issue for our church.

Sorry, I had assumed we were about done and made some changes. First was temporarily installing Microsoft Security Essentials. I then updated a number of Microsoft components. Also installed TeamViewer for future remote support.

The only issue I have found was a problem with the Media Manager Services tray item), that when clicked brought up a warning from Security Essentials about being blocked. Also anoter related component of this tray item resulted in a runtime error pointing to

"...ommon Files\Roxio Shared\9.0\SharedCOM\RoxWatchTray9.exe"

The runtime error box cannot be dismissed without a reboot. I doubt if they are using Roxio, and if so I can uninstall it if appropriate. Or, hopefully reinstall it if required.

Here is the Hijackthis logfile.

Please read Option 1, 2 & 3 below before checking the associated entries.

Option 1: TeamViewer connects to any PC or server around the world within a few seconds. You can remote control your partner's PC as if you were sitting right in front of it. This is a legitimate program. Should it start automatically and run in the background? NO If you use this processes, you can start it when needed, taking care to put the Service on Manual Startup. I recommend that all of the processes running for TeamViewer be checked to be stopped. If you do no use this process, it should be stopped, uninstalled, Service disabled and removed.

Option 2:Dell Support Center If you do not use the it can be uninstalled in Add/Remove Programs

Note: Scanners, cameras, printers do no need to start on boot. Print can be accessed on File> Print[/b] Others can be accessed in All Programs

Close all Windows except HijackThis and click on "Fix Checked."

  • To expand the Command Column, (this shows what the process 'belongs' to) hold left mouse button down on the dividing line on frame above Location and move to the right to expand.
  • Uncheck any processes you do not need to start on boot. The processes set in Bold Red type are the processes to uncheck
  • Click on Apply> OK when finished.
Reboot into Normal Mode.
NOTE:
When you reboot the system the first time after making changes using the msconfig utility, a nag message comes up that can be ignored and closed after checking 'don't show this message again.' Remain in Selective Startup to retain those changes.

After removing additional items

Tried to follow the instructions, with the resulting new hijack this log shown below. Decided to leave the Dell support center and Teamviewer installed.

Did have problems with removing roxio stuff. Resorted to the instructions given at Roxio Link .

Still a question about the printer drivers Will the user need to do anything differe to print if I delete the following? Don't know these programs myself!

Hopefully, about the end of this journey. I have been working with computers since the 60's, but still don't consider myself as a Windows user nerd. I wonder how "normal" users deal with issues such as these! Oh well, that is the way it is.

Will the user need to do anything differe to print if I delete the following? Don't know these programs myself!
No. You are not "deleting" the process- you are only stopping the process from running. And if you use msconfig to uncheck the process on the Startup menu, you will only be stopping it from starting on boot and then running in the background.
The user only needs to click on File> Print in the browser. That will give a screen to access whatever you want to do with the printer.

Decided to leave the Dell support center and Teamviewer installed.
You don't have to uninstall either one of these. But neither on needs to start on boot and run in the background, using the system resources. All you need to do to access is go to All Programs and choose the program you want.

And you can also change the corresponding Services to Manual. That allow the Team Viewer or Dell Support to be available whenever you click on the program.

I wonder how "normal" users deal with issues such as these! Oh well, that is the way it is.
Chuckle! Even the most "normal" user - aka knowledgeable or exerienced- can bend in the face of some malware! Rootkits are 'big' now, so are the malware programs that make files, icons and programs 'disappear.' We do what we can to be safe (well, some of us do!)
====================================
Removing all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created
  • Uninstall ComboFix and all Backups of the files it deleted
  • Click START> then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • Download OTCleanIt by OldTimer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes.
-----
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Note: If any tool, file or folder (belonging to the program we have used) hasn't been deleted, please delete it manually.
------------------------------------------
  • You should now set a new Restore Point and remove the old restore points to prevent infection from any previous Restore Points.
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools
  • Click "System Restore".
  • Choose "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next".
  • Give the Restore Point a name> click "Create".
  • Go back and follow the path to > System Tools.
    [*]Choose Disc Cleanup
[*]Click "OK" to select the partition or drive you want.
    [*]Click the "More Options" Tab.
[*]Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous Restore Points except the newly created one.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Stay safe! Tips for added security and safer browsing: (Links are in Bold Blue)
  1. Browser Security
[o] Safe Settings (Please ignore the suggestion to use the Registry Editior in this section "Creating a Custom Security Zone")
[o] ZonedOut. This manages the Zones in Internet Explorer. (For IE7 and IE8, Windows 2000 thru Vista. No Windows 7)
    [o] Replace the Host Files
[o] Google Toolbar Pop Up Blocker
[o]Web of Trust (WOT) Site Advisor. Traffic-light rating symbols show which rate the site for Trustworthiness, Vendor Reliability, Privacy, Child Safety.
  2. Have layered Security:
[o]Antivirus :(only one):Both of the following programs are free and known to be good:
    [o]Avira-AntiVir-Personal-Free-Antivirus
    [o] [o]Avast-Free Antivirus
[o]Firewall (only one): Use bi-directional firewall. Both of the following programs are free and known to be good:
    [o]Comodo
    [o]Zone Alarm
  3. Antimalware: I recommend all of the following:
[o]Spywareblaster: SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX.
    [o]Spybot Search & Destroy
  4. Updates: Stay current:
[o] the Microsoft Download Sitefrequently. All updates marked Critical and the current SP updates.
[o]Adobe Reader Install current, uninstall old.
[o]Java Updates Install current, uninstall old.
  5. Tracking Cookies
    Reset Cookie:
[o]For Internet Explorer: Internet Options (through Tools or Control Panel) Privacy tab> Advanced button> check 'override automatic Cookie handling'> check 'accept first party Cookies'> check 'Block third party Cookies'> check 'allow per session Cookies'> Apply> OK.
[o]For Firefox: Tools> Options> Privacy> Cookies> check ‘accept Cookies from Sites’> Uncheck 'accept third party Cookies'> Set Keep until 'they expire'. This will allow you to keep Cookies for registered sites and prevent or remove others. (Note: for Firefox v3.5, after Privacy click on 'use custom settings for History.')
I suggest using the following two add-on for Firefox. They will prevent the Tracking Cookies that come from ads and banners and other sources:
    AdBlock Plus
    Easy List
[o]For Chrome: Tools> Options> Under The Hood> Privacy Section> CHECK 'Restrict how third party Cookies can be used'> Close.
  6. Do regular Maintenance
    [o] Temporary File Cleaner
  7. Restore Points:
    [o]See System Restore Guide
  8. Safe Email Handling
[o] Don't open email from anyone you don't know.
[o] Don't open Attachments in the email. Safe to your desktop and scan for viruses using a right click
[o] Don't leave your personal email address on the internet. Have a separate email account at one of the free web-based emails like Yahoo.
Please let me know if you find any bad link.
