Hiya! Well, I'm working on a laptop for a friend who got it infected. Initially, computer had Win 7 2012 Antivirus and MBAM seemed to remove it, but a little later MSE started complaining again. It detected Trojan:DOS/Alureon.A and said that it could not remove it. Directed me to run WDO, so I did, which came up clean. After reboot again, it initially detected Exploit:Java/CVE-20121-3544.N - which it said it was able to clean. A little bit later (minute or so) the Trojan:DOS/Alureon.A detection popped up again. So, here I am! Requested logs to follow!

MBAM:

Thanks in advance for any help! This is my CPA's laptop and he needs to do my taxes :)

Welcome to TechSpot! I'll you clean this up so you can get the taxes done.

While I finish checking the logs, please handle this:
AV: Microsoft Security Essentials
AV: Norton Internet Security

Two suites> 2 antivirus programs, 2 firewalls. Not even the tax helper should have more than one AV and one FW. Multiples of either or both make a system more vulnerable, not less.

Please uninstall one of the suites. Reboot the system when finished.
==================================
After the above has been handled, you can go ahead and run the following:

To run the Eset Online Virus Scan:
If you use Internet Explorer:
  1. Open the ESETOnlineScan
  2. Skip to #4 to "Continue with the directions"

    If you are using a browser other than Internet Explorer
  3. Open Eset Smart Installer
    [o] Click on the esetsmartinstaller_enu.exelink and save to the desktop.
    [o] Double click on the desktop icon to run.
    [o] After successful installation of the ESET Smart Installer, the ESET Online Scanner will be launched in a new Window
  4. Continue with the directions.
  5. Check 'Yes I accept terms of use.'
  6. Click Start button
  7. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
    esetonlinescannersettings_thumb.jpg
  8. Uncheck 'Remove found threats'
  9. Check 'Scan archives/
  10. Leave remaining settings as is.
  11. Press the Start button.
  12. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please wait for the scan to finish.
  13. When the scan completes, press List of found threats
  14. Push Export of text file and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Paste this log in your next reply.
  15. Push the Back button, then Finish
NOTE: If no malware is found then no log will be produced. Let me know if this is the case.
====================================
Please note: If you have previously run Combofix and it's still on the system, please uninstall it. Then download the current version and do the scan: Uninstall directions, if needed
  • Click START> then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
--------------------------------------
Expect these- they are normal:
1. If asked to install or or update the Recovery Console, allow. (you will need internet connection for this)
2. Before you run the Combofix scan, please disable any security software you have running.
3. Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

Download Combofix from HERE or HEREhttp://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe and save to the desktop
  • Double click combofix.exe
    cf-icon.jpg
    & follow the prompts.
  • If prompted for Recovery Console, please allow.
  • Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
    • The Recovery Console was successfully installed.[/b]
    • Note: If Combofix was downloaded to a flash drive, the Recovery Console will not install- just bypass and go on.[/b]
    • Note: No query will be made if the Recovery Console is already on the system.
  • .Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs
    (If you need help with this, please see HERE)
  • .Close any open browsers.
  • .Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware
  • .If Combofix asks you to update the program, allow
  • When the scan completes , a report will be generated-it will open a text window. Please paste the C:\ComboFix.txt in next reply..
Re-enable your Antivirus software.
Note 1:Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Note 2:If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion", restart the computer.
Note 3:CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
=====================================
Please leave logs for Combofix and the Eset can in your next reply.
======================================
My Guidelines: please read and follow:
  • Be patient. Malware cleaning takes time and I am also working with other members while I am helping you.
  • Read my instructions carefully. If you don't understand or have a problem, ask me.
  • If you have questions, or if a program doesn't work, stop and tell me about it. Don't try to get around it yourself.
  • Follow the order of the tasks I give you. Order is crucial in cleaning process.
  • File sharing programs should be uninstalled or disabled during the cleaning process..
  • Observe these:
    [o] Don't use any other cleaning programs or scans while I'm helping you.
    [o] Don't use a Registry cleaner or make any changes in the Registry.
    [o] Don't download and install new programs- except those I give you.
  • Please let me know if there is any change in the system.

If I don't get a reply from you in 5 days, the thread will be closed. If your problem persist, you can send a PM to reopen it.
=====================================

With all due respects, this does not appear to be a work system. Instead, it appears to be for gaming.

I would like to know if there are any 'symptoms' now.
Initially, computer had Win 7 2012 Antivirus and MBAM seemed to remove it,
Malwarebytes alone will not remove this infection.

The host files have been hijacked and searches are being redirected to a site in Romania.
--------------------------------------
Windows 7 Rogue Antivirus 2012
  1. Pretends to be a security update for Windows installed via Automatic Updates. It will then install itself as a single executable that has a random consisting of three characters
  2. Clicking on any executable loads the malware
  3. Display fake security alerts on the infected computer.
  4. May not allow you to download files on the infected computer. If this is the case, then you will need to download the files requested in this guide on another computer and then transfer them to the infected computer
  5. Changes settings on your computer so that when you launch an executable, a file ending with .exe, it will instead launch the infection rather than the desired program.

To fix #5, you start here: Download a Registry file that will fix these changes.
Please download FixNCR.reg and save it to a removable media such as a CD/DVD, external Drive, or USB flash drive.
  • Insert the removable device into the infected computer and open the folder the drive letter associated with it.(Usually C)
  • Double click the FixNCR.reg file
  • You should now be able to run the .exe files.
-------------------------------------
To end the processes that belong to the rogue program:
Please click on RKill
  • At the download page, click on Download now button for iExplore.exe download link and save to the desktop
  • Double click on the iExplore.exe icon
  • Please be patient- it may take a bit.
  • The black Window will close when through and you can continue.
Note: If you get a message that RKill is malware, ignore it> it's from the malware.
=======================================
Do not reboot your computer after running RKill as the malware programs will start again.
================================
Update and rescan with Malwarebytes:
  • Select Perform Full Scan on the Scanner tab
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When scan has finished, you will see this image:
    scan-finished.jpg
  • Click on OK to close box and continue.
  • Click on the Show Results button.
  • Click on the Remove Selected button to remove all the listed malware.
  • At end of malware removal, the scan log opens and displays in Notepad. Be sure to click on Format> Uncheck Word Wrap before copying the log to paste in your next reply.
==============================
This should remove the major offender. Reboot the Computer into Normal Mode

Logs and information in next reply please.

eset is running right now. I'll post again after that, combofix, and the next post fixes/scans are finished.

Thanks

Do you want me to continue on with the Windows 7 Rogue Antivirus 2012 fixes to make sure that this process gets followed?

Thanks

Go ahead with the rest of the scans. The Eset entries are in the Java cache. This usually happens if there is an outdated version of Java on the system. I'll clear the cache with script I'll use for Combofix.

Current Java is v6u30. Update as below if needed.
Please update Java: Java Updates . Uninstall any earlier versions in Add/Remove Programs as they are vulnerabilities for the system.

Be sure to check all download screens for any pre-check toolbars or BHO> if found, remove the check before the download..

Please remove one of these antivirus programs:

AV: Microsoft Security Essentials *Enabled/
AV: Norton Internet Security *Enabled/
FW: Norton Internet Security *Disabled
SP: Microsoft Security Essentials *Enabled/
SP: Norton Internet Security *Disabled
SP: Windows Defender *Disabled/
.
You should one have 1 AV and 1 FW. Multiples of either or both makes the system more vulnerable, no less. Right now, you have 2 antivirus programs trying to do the same thing. Perhaps the conflict this causes is why the virus isn't being removed.

If you previously used Norton, then decided you use MSE instead, you must uninstall the Norton Program because it is still loading. Norton Removal Tool

There were also errors indicting problems with MSE:
1. You must install the latest definition updates in order to enable real-time protection. 1/17
2. The Microsoft Antimalware Service service did not shut down properly after receiving a preshutdown control. 1/22
3. Real-time protection has stopped functioning for an unknown reason. Restart the service in order to recover.1/22

Please reboot after you have remove one of the programs.
===============================
It's possible that the fact you had 2 AVs running and one may not have had the updates for the Real Time Protection, actually left you with an insecure system.
=================================
Also, please note Combofix instructions direct you to disable security programs for the scan. Both of your AVs were running (Enabled) when you scanned. (Enabled)
================================
I had you check the Java program because all of the Eset entries were in the Java cache.
=================================
Can you tell me what was done in these 2 entries:
2012-01-23 15:49:51 -------- d-----w- C:\ProgramData\Recovery
RP390: 1/22/2012 2:00:49 PM - Restore Operation
===================================
I'd like you run HijackThis. I can have you stop the, is still hijacked:
First, set up a Directory for HijackThis as follows:
Right click Taskbar> Explore> My Computer> Local Drive (C)> File> New> Folder> Name folder HijackThis
Exit Explorer
You now have a folder C:\HijackThis
-----------------------------------------
Download HijackThis http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HijackThis.zipand save to your desktop.
  • Click on the HJT icon> 'Extract all files'> Extraction Wizard> Click on Browse to right of dialogue box that says 'Select a folder'
  • Extract it to the directory on your hard drive you created C:\HijackThis.
  • Then navigate to that directory and double-click on the hijackthis.exe file.
  • When started click on the Scan button and then the Save Log button to create a log of your information.
  • The log file and then the log will open in notepad. Be sure to click on Format> Uncheck Word Wrap when you open Notepad
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and paste (Ctrl+V) the log in your next reply.

NOTE: Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I ran the Norton removal tool as the first step in this thread when you asked me to remove one of the AV tools already, but I ran it again just to make sure.

The MSE definitions were current as of 1/24, but I updated them again to today (1/26).

I ran HijackThis (Right-click -> Run As Administrator for Win7)

At some point are we going to use the bootrec.exe tool to fix the MBR since this is a boot sector trojan?

i.e.

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildbcd

?

Just for kicks, since it does not do anything on a scan (no fixing), I downloaded MBRCheck. I went to launch my command prompt as an administrator, and the shortcut pointed to a missing path, i looked at the properties and it was pointed to a file in the TEMP directory instead of the default c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe

I fixed this, then launched a cmd prompt as administrator, ran MBRCheck with no switches and got this output

C:\Users\Joe\Desktop>MBRCheck.exe

Hope that helps a bit

I guess you didn't read this> we don't d things "just for kicks" in this forum:
My Guidelines: please read and follow:
  • Be patient. Malware cleaning takes time. I am also working with other members while I am helping you.
  • Read my instructions carefully. If you don't understand or have a problem, ask me. Follow the order of the tasks I give you. Order is crucial in cleaning process.
  • If you have questions, or if a program doesn't work, stop and tell me about it. Don't try to get around it yourself.
  • File sharing programs should be uninstalled or disabled during the cleaning process..
  • Observe these:
    [o] Don't follow directions given to someone else
    [o] Don't use any other cleaning programs or scans while I'm helping you.
    [o] Don't use a Registry cleaner or make any changes in the Registry.
    [o] Don't download and install new programs- except those I give you.

Bootkit Remover:

Download Bootkit Remover.zip and save to your desktop.
  1. Extract the remover.exe file from the RAR using a program capable of extracting compressed files. (Use 7-Zip if you don't have an extraction program, )
  2. Double-click on the remover.exe file to run the program.
    (Vista/7 users,right click on remover.exe and click Run As Administrator.)
  3. You will see a black screen with data
  4. Right click on the screen and click Select All.
  5. Press CTRL+C
  6. Open a Notepad and press CTRL+V
  7. Paste the output in your next reply.

http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com/files/download/11-bootkit-remover/ point to a .zip file, not a .rar. There is not a remover.exe file inside the compressed file, but there is a file called boot_cleaner.exe

Upon right-clicking and running this as administrator, this is the output, which is still up on screen

Bootkit Remover
(c) 2009 Esage Lab
www.esagelab.com

Program version: 1.2.0.1
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition (build 7600), 64-bit

System volume is \\.\C:
\\.\C: -> \\.\PhysicalDrive0 at offset 0x00000000`0c800000

Size Device Name MBR Status
--------------------------------------------
465 GB \\.\PhysicalDrive0 Controlled by rootkit!

Boot code on some of your physical disks is hidden by a rootkit.
To disinfect the master boot sector, use the following command:
remover.exe fix <device_name>
To inspect the boot code manually, dump the master boot sector:
remover.exe dump <device_name> [output_file]

Done;
Press any key to quit...

My apology over the confusion with the Bootremover. I'm not sure what they are trying to do, but it appears now that they use the term boot cleaner.exe instead of the previous name of remover.exe.

The links for the program have been changed several times. Let's proceed as follows:

  • Open Notepad
  • Copy and paste the text in the codebox into Notepad:

Code:
@ECHO OFF
START remover.exe fix \\.\PhysicalDrive0
EXIT
  • Go FILE > SAVE AS and in the dropdown box select SAVE AS TYPE to ALL FILES
  • In the FILE NAME box type fix.bat.
  • Save fix.bat to your Desktop.
  • Double click on fixbat to run.
    You may see a black box appear; this is normal.
  • When done, run rboot cleaner.exe again and post its output.

FYI: RAR versus ZIP
They are both compressed files.

Comparing to ZIP file format, RAR provides a number of advanced features: more convenient multipart (multivolume) archives, tight compression including special solid, multimedia and text modes, strong AES-128 encryption, recovery records helping to repair an archive even in case of physical data damage, Unicode support to process non-English file names and a lot more.
