Nvidia announces new 400M series mobile GPUs

Nvidia has unveiled seven new mobile GPU parts today to complement the company's existing, GF100-based GeForce GTX 480M. The release includes two enthusiast products, the GTX 470M and GTX 460M, and five performance grade parts -- the GT 445M, GT 435M, GT 425M, GT 420M and GT 415M. The company claims these are up to 40% faster than the 300M-series GPUs they will replace, and include support for DirectX 11 and Optimus switchable graphics, as well as GeForce 3D Vision (from the GT425M and up), PhysX, CUDA, Verde drivers, and 3DTV Play software.

The table above contains some key specs revealed by Nvidia for its 400M GPUs. They made no mention of things like TDPs, die sizes, GPU code-names or price. However, looking at the specs and press shots shared by the company it looks like at least three different GPUs were used: The GTX 470M is apparently based on the GF104 chip that powers GTX 460 desktop cards, the GTX 460M and GTX 445M are likely GF106 products, and the remaining four could be GF108 based. Interestingly, Nvidia still hasn't released any GF106 or GF108 parts on the desktop, but they can't be far off.

The cards will be offered immediately through PC makers including Dell, Lenovo, Samsung, Toshiba, Acer and Asus -- the latter two will also have notebooks with 120Hz displays and stereoscopic goggles for 3D gaming and 3D Blu-ray content.

I'd be interested in seeing how they perform thermally, particularly for long periods of graphics-intensive things like gaming. Wondering if they got that heat beast under control on this generation.

Although, my current laptop with nVidia graphics does provide a good lap warming experience during the winter :)
