Open Forum: What desktop speakers do you use?

Well, you asked for it...

Where's the tweeter?

Am using a AudioEngine N22 desk amp with a pair of Polk TSI100 bookshelf speakers for gaming, music and movies. They sound fantastic at any volume including nearfield. I also have a Sennheiser HD 650 and HifiMan HE-400 headphones among many others which I would love to use more but thanks to thin walls and upstairs neighbors who stomp around like elephants at all hours I am using the speakers more and more for my mental sanity.

5.1 Bookshelves connected to a Pioneer receiver in main room and Logitech Z Cinema for the other room.

Logitech X-540 5.1 Speaker since 2008 which replaced another 5.1 Logitech set I had before.

I've been using a set of Logitech Z-560 speakers in 2.1 mode. I never could find room for the other 2 satellites. I don't know what happened with the computer speaker industry but they hit a high with the Klipsch Promedias, the THX series of Logitechs, the Bose companion series, and the Harmon Kardon sticks; but other than that....it's gone flat. Only the somewhat recent AudioEngine's A5+'s seem to garner the high audio fidelity of these other "Old" speakers.

I wish Logitech, Bose or AudioEngine would make a 2.1 solution for 2017.... I want earth-shattering base and crystal clear audio without having to put massive studio monitors on my desk.

My two cents....

I do a lot of audio / music related stuff... My main speakers are KSC K8's. I spend a lot of time with headphones on though, which are Audio Technica's ATH-M50's. I also have a crappy set of speakers that I can switch to as well. When making music it's ideal to have perfect speakers to hear your mix but it's also beneficial to play your mix through crappy speakers from time to time because the crappy speakers will really let you know where there are problem areas in your music. When people listen to music they listen through all manner of speakers and headphones so you gotta mix your music so that it sounds good everywhere and that takes a lot of time and effort.

I have Logitech Z603 2.1 speakers. They are well worth the $85 I paid for them when they were on sale. Extremely good audio quality for such cheap speakers. The range on the subwoofer is quite impressive.

Logitech Z-680's for my machine(s) since 2005
Bose Companion 3 (older model 2.1 without stands) for my wife since 2009

JBL LSR305's. The biggest improvement in sound quality on a computer ever for me. There just a delight to listen to near-field.

We've got two setups here and both are using Bose Companion 2 Series III. For the price, small footprint, lack of a need for a separate woofer, and good sound at close quarters, these are hard to beat.
