Please help.. can't boot winXP even in safe mode

I have an ancient (5 yrs old) Fujitsu Amilo M 7400 with loads of precious personal stuff on it. It's a Intel Pentium M 1400 MHz and runs WinXP.
Yesterday I was using the comp as usual, at one point it slowed down as it often does when using more than one app :)) so instead of shutting it down I just hit the power button to turn it off. When I went to start it up again win just wouldn't boot (the startup screen went on for about two minutes), then rebooted. I tried using the Last known good config, again nothing. Tried the Safe mode, it just went through the list of drivers then paused for about 15 seconds, then rebooted again.
So - please help. Need I mention that my comp knowledge is very limited?
I don't have any original CDs for this laptop but I do have the XP Home SP2 DVD and Recovery DVD which came with my mother's HP laptop - would this do any good?

Thank u...

Well XP Home came on a CD, so not sure if that's authentic or not
Basically you just need to run CheckDisk from the Recovery Console
Here's some info and also a free RC (XP Recovery Console) CD you can use: https://www.techspot.com/vb/post694184-133.html

Or if it's a standard XP Setup CD, just do this:

CheckDisk Recovery Console:

Try CheckDisk from the Recovery Console, some info HERE

Running Checkdisk from your Windows Recovery Console
  • Boot from your Windows Setup CD
  • Select the first R prompt, to log into the Recovery Console
  • Press 1 then Enter
  • Then type: chkdsk /r then press enter
  • Once finished, type Exit, then Restart
Other than that, you may need to Repair Windows: http://www.windowsxphome.windowsreinstall.com/sp2sp3installxpcdrepair/indexfullpage.htm
