Problem ripping cd audio

I recently replaced my old faulty burner with a toshiba sd-r6112 and have been trying to rip some cd's using media player 11 and win XP.
Whenever I try to rip a CD I can only perform one rip.
Once I replace the cd with another to start another rip media player ebecomes non responsive and totally hangs up.
It also locks up any other programs and does not allow me to access the internet through explorer.
The only solution is to shut down and restart which is a pain.
Is this a hardware or software issue and any suggestions on how to fix would be much appreciated.

What is your computer configuration? Memory in particular... Also, age... and what is the software you are using to perform the burn? Roxio, Record Now, Creator, Instant Burn? or other...'?

I have a laptop about 3 years old AMD 1.6 GHz processor and 1GB RAM..
I'm using Windows media player 11 to rip CD's.
I've recently formatted the HDD and loaded XP fresh with current updates.

CDex is free as well and is pretty good, a bit easier to use than EAC, but not as advanced for stuff like ripping to flac.

Yes, CDex is nice as well, but EAC is reccommended for the most accurate audio CD rips as far as i know
