Hi guys/gals...

I just installed XP on my new machine (e6600, 8800 756MB GTX, 2GB DDR2 - Not that any of that matters really...) and after a few days ive gone to use the command prompt and been told by it :

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\xxx>ping
'ping' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

C:\Documents and Settings\xxx>

It returns this message for EVERY command i type in...even the help function. Is this a known issue and if so how can it be fixed? Or is it a case of repairing the windows installation?

Many thanks in advance,

Odysee.

Your path command is missing or corrupt.
It should like something like
PATH c:\windows;%systemroot;%system32;
plus variables created by program installers.
To change the values, go to Control Panel > System > Advanced > Environment Variables > system variables; find the path and make sure the syntax is correct. If it is missing you can add a new line.

Try running something with full path like "C:\windows\notepad" and "C:\windows\notepad.exe". Try both with and without extension.

If it works with extension, but not without, then you have a problem with PATHEXT and not PATH.

Thanks a lot guys for your replies.

It was the route selected although i have corrected it and now it works! thanks guys once again!!
