Solved Seeing random *32 file extensions in Task Menu

Java

I'm sorry but I didn't see a log produced when I ran Java. Where would I find the Security Check log?

I don't need Java log.
I need new Security Check log. You have to re-run it.

Ok, here is new OTC fix log. Can you verify it is correct before I move to next step?

Java is till outdated.

1. Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Note 2: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

2. Now, we need to remove old Java version and its remnants...

Download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe (Vista users! Right click on JavaRa.exe, click Run As Administrator), pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.

Java

When I go to Java link, the first button says "Verify Java Version". When I click on that it times out and I get an Internet Explorer error, as follows. This happened the first time too so I went directly to the "Downloads" link and uninstalled and reinstalled the lastest 64-bit version. Please advise how I should proceed this time.

Ok, think I updated Java and removed old versions. What do you need next? (computer is unbelievably slow)

I need to see new Security Check log and Eset scan.

Going to bed so I'll check on you tomorrow.

Your computer is clean

1. We need to reset system restore to prevent your computer from being accidentally reinfected by using some old restore point(s). We'll create fresh, clean restore point, using following OTL script:

Run OTL

  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following:

Code:
:OTL
:Commands
[purity]
[emptytemp]
[EMPTYFLASH]
[CLEARALLRESTOREPOINTS]
[Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Post resulting log.

2. Now, we'll remove all tools, we used during our cleaning process

Clean up with OTL:

  • Double-click OTL.exe to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTL as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTL main screen, press the CLEANUP button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

If you still have any tools or logs leftover on your computer you can go ahead and delete those off of your computer now.

3. Make sure, Windows Updates are current.

4. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

5. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

6. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

7. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC) weekly.

8. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): https://www.techspot.com/downloads/4898-secunia-personal-software-inspector-psi.html. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

9. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

10. (Windows XP only) Run defrag at your convenience.

11. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

12. Read How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic2520.html

13. Please, let me know, how your computer is doing.

Update

Hi Broni, Computer is still on the slow side. For example, sometimes I click a link or text box several times before the screen responds (computer is Toshiba Satellite laptop just 4 months old). Also, you mentioned that the Ask.com toolbar is a typical foistware. I first got that with a pop-up at the bottom of my screen with an orange bar on it. I never accepted the install but I remember starting to see it a couple of weeks back. I am now getting a pop-up that looks identical at the bottom of my screen asking me if I want to make Internet Explorer my default browser. Should I be suspicous of this?

I'm updating Windows now. How do I check #4 in your instructions to see if any *Trojan* was listed among infections?

Thanks,

Are you talking about a browser, or computer overall?

There were trojans present so passwords change is due.

No. Depending on which browser you normally use say "Yes", or "No.".

Installed 1 Windows Update

That is a good question - slowness seems to be browser-related activities, not so much computer overall.

Regarding passwords, I use RoboForm. It is not possible to change the Master Password without essentially deleting all passwords and then re-building RoboForm. However, I can easily change the individual passwords for each account. Do you think it is important that I change the Master Pwd?

Ok, I've installed *WOT* and Secunia.

It is going to take some time to rebuild all of my passwords but I'll do that over the next day or two.

To be more specific about my computer 'slowness', it is not even the browsing speed, but responsiveness when I click - often takes several tries. I have a new battery in my mouse so it isn't that.

I really appreciate your help getting my computer clean! I'll run the suggested weekly scans and hopefully all will be ok. Thank you, thank you for the time you spent with me on this issue!

You're very welcome

In this forum, we make sure, your computer is free of malware and your computer is clean :)
Because the access to malware forum is very limited, your best option is to create new topic about your current issue, at Windows section.
You'll get more attention.
Good luck!

still seeing *32 in task manager

Hi Broni,

Should I be concerned about this? Here are some examples:

iexplore.exe *32
iTunes.exe *32
ooVoo.exe *32
CarboniteUI.exe *32
AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe *32
passcards.exe *32

there are several more - I have never noticed this before my recent computer issues so wondered what they are and if they are suspicious.

Thanks for any insight.

Sheri
