Sometimes cannot play wav files

Normally the system works fine (XP sp3, SoundMAX) and Media Player plays sound files.

I just installed and am learning Audacity and have recorded a test file and exported and saved it as a .wav file.
When I try to play it, MP opens and looks like it's playing the file but there's no sound.

This has happened on occasion in the past with .wav files, but only occasionally. Music CD's play fine with WMP.

Per a search I did, WMP is supposed to be able to play .wav files.

Please help!

What do you mean you recorded a test file? Did you plug in a musical instrument of some kind into your computer and record it? Did you sing into the mic? Import music from some other source?

The problem may not be with the playback but that nothing recorded.

You can also try downloading winamp and VLC and try running the file on them. It might narrow down the problem to playback or the file itself.

I recorded off a tape recorder, and the recording meter in Audacity showed varying volume as it progressed.

Why would it not play a .wav file exported from Audacity when it will usually play other .wav files?

Properties shows there to be content in the file.
