    1) Just as good practice, i meant you might want to backup personal files/folders/etc now as a "just in case" as you try to fix problems (taking the time to do backups is just an extra measure of caution and being prudent)

    2) Looks like their registry fix came from a Microsoft KB here. So we'll assume / guess it's OK (but that backup guards against the worst case. So you at least are assured you have all your personal data stored off of your hard drive if you there's a problem

    3) To run the install, just run the .exe file and let's see if it works

OK. just catching up with your posts here... Trying a system restore is a good next step but, again, i'd still first make sure all your files/folders are backed up.

Oh I hear ya that back up is wise....) I learn the hard way...)

I just tried to run the .exe file just now...no go....it has encountered a problem....

i am still concerned that maybe i did not type the registry thing perfectly and i have no idea how to get back there...will restore fix that?

Hmmm... Something interesting... If misery loves company:

i just did a google of
    Code:
    [B]"SoundMAX.part1.exe" encountered a problem[/B]
and it seems you're not alone with this problem. Example see here

Another thing to try: Download the files again BUT choose a different download site then the last time. Maybe a file is corrupted?

btw... i still recommend that backup first to prevent any regrets later! ;)

Sorry for the double post.. but just to make sure you see this (as i gotta run for now)

In addition to attempting to download from a different ASUS download server (when you click their download icon such as Global vs. China choose a different one then last time)

You might also open Device Manager, select the sound card (it might now be listed under "Other" or Unknown) then rt click to select Update Driver. See if Windows can find a driver for it.

Based on my google, the problem might be file corruption from ASUS? i dunno. Have you also tried running any other .exe file to see if other .exe files work?

Am sure Mailpup or I or someone will be checking back in with you on the thread. Gotta go now

FYI - it's not an .exe file issue for I ran something tonight for something else and it worked fine.

Tried to download from another "area" on the asus site - instead of global went to china. Still the same problem........*sigh*

To clarify, what are the names of the final three files you are trying to execute? I just want to make sure you ended up with the correct ones. Also, did you ever install the other drivers from the Asus website?

Wow. Amazing!! I found people have been downloading this 3 part driver from ASUS and complaining about this exact same crash problem since 2006!!

Try this driver version instead. Unzip it and then run the Setup.exe file

You'd think they would have corrected it by now. Evidently not.

great if it works, i think i just updated windows with sp2 & re-installed the driver & it worked.

Yea. I couldn;t even guess why Asus would leave a driver problem like this on their web site for years!
