If you have not figured it out by now....
Your HD is on the blink. Make backups immediately onto the good Maxtor.
Then go to the Storage and Network Forum, D/L and run the Western Digital test-utility.
    Report back with the results.

Although your tests past ,the fact that your HDD is making that noise means that it is going to fail completely in the near future. Those tests generally represent the condition of the surfaces of the disks inside. The fact that you can still get your system going means the disk surface is functional. It sounds as though the motor/bearing etc. /hardware are failing. As Real.. said , get your system backed up ASAP .Then buy a new HDD, they are quite cheap.Do clean load of Win and recover your data .
Also I noticed in your running systems ,Quicktime and messenger are running .It is a good idea to stop those App... from starting on their own .They are not neceessary all the time and they just add to bootime + unnecessary cpu/ram usage.Best to start and stop them manually, when you actually use them .They can also represent a security weakness to your system .

Ask your Dad if he can read this whole thread, perhaps he will believe we are telling you the truth. No matter what ,make sure you backup everything that is important.
HDD are so cheap that to pay an expert who may or may not be able to fix it ,just is not worth the exercise.
Good luck and get back to us with how it all works out.
