Strange Internet connection problem

  1. I was without internet connection for two days due to a strange problem. Windows Network Diagnostics was saying I was connected to the internet but both Google Chrome and IE were coming up blank. MY internet service provider did some remote testing the following day and could not find anything wrong on their end. I was actually able to update my anti-virus software at that time, which seems to indicate that my machine had access to the net but was somehow unable to browse. My computer ran without problems or slowdowns at all -- just the strange issue with the browsers.

After deleting all my latest downloads, I went ahead and used Windows' System Restore service. That solved the problem. I've done several reboots over the course of the past 18 hours since and have not run into any problems at all with my browsers. Speedtest has consistently yielded normal results. My connection is running at the speed it's supposed to be running. I have noticed no slowing down anywhere. My PC isn't acting "goofy" and I haven't had any warnings from ESET. (I use ESET NOD 32 Anti-Virus 5, by the way.) I've run an ESET scan and CCleaner with my PC on safe mode. No registry errors. No warnings.

I nonetheless suspect some type of malware was the culprit. I keep no sensitive files on this machine. I shopped on amazon and newegg with this PC about a month ago, but I never set it to "remember" any passwords. (Just to be sure, however, I've changed my passwords to the above sites using a secure PC at the office and alerted my bank and credit card services).

For now, I would prefer not to reformat my PC as my OS is mounted on an SSD. Moreover, I'm a clueless noob so I really don't want to mess with something that seems to be working all right.

I've read the 5-step malware removal sticky on this site. I'm thinking of running my system as it is for a few days to see if something out of the ordinary should pop up before I run any apps that would make changes to my system. But what should I be looking out for? What are the symptoms of a "compromised" system? Should I keep an eye out for any strange processes in task manager when I'm online? Because, inclined as I am not to do a reformat, I will do so if absolutely necessary.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hi, Broni. I ran GMER twice. It found no malware and produced no log. (The log it produced was blank.)

The link to which I was directed said GMER would produce no log should it find no infections. (I'm going to take a look again, but I'm almost positive it said that.)

Thank you, thank you, thank you for taking time to help.

PS: Yes, checked again. The link says "NOTE: If GMER doesn't find any modifications it will NOT produce any log."

    That's fine.

    Download aswMBR to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
If you see this question: Would you like to download latest Avast! virus definitions?" say "Yes".
Click the "Scan" button to start scan.
On completion of the scan click "Save log", save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.

NOTE. aswMBR will create MBR.dat file on your desktop. This is a copy of your MBR. Do NOT delete it.

    =============================================================

Download Bootkit Remover to your desktop.

    • Unzip downloaded file to your Desktop.
    • Double-click on boot_cleaner.exe to run the program (Vista/7 users, right click on boot_cleaner.exe and click Run As Administrator).
    • It will show a Black screen with some data on it.
    • Right click on the screen and click Select All.
    • Press CTRL+C
    • Open a Notepad and press CTRL+V
    • Post the output back here.

Hi, Broni. It turns out my PC was infected, after all. I ran aswMBR as you directed. Avast detected a Trojan variant, I think it was. My PC restarted on its own. On booting to Windows, I got a prompt that said Windows needed to scan my drives. This happened about three times as my PC just kept crashing. (This virus apparently messed with the OS file systems and partitions.) I attempted to post the results here, but I again encountered my original problem: my browers were coming up blank. Apart from that, ESET was in a frenzy prompting warnings every 30 seconds or so.

Frustrated, I ended up having to send my machine to a nearby shop and let the technicians there remove the infection and then do a clean install. My SSD sustained some damage -- or at least some degradation. From a previous 7.7 WEI score, it now rates a lower 7.5.

I think what happened was that I forgot to disable ESET's gamer mode while browsing. That pretty much makes one's system completely vulnerable. Lesson learned.

Thanks very much for your help. Weren't it for the utilities you recommended and provided links to, I would not have known my machine was infected and the virus could have done even more damage than it did.
