Solved System Check virus?

I press control alt delete and a pop up box appears Says

Task Manager

Task Manager has been disable by your administrator

I then click okay and the box closes

I press start the basic icons for documents, pictures, music, network, control panel, help and surport, etc... is not there. I assume there will return when I follow you manual fix guide.
That's a subject to another of my guides: http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com/topic/49859-missing-items-from-main-start-menu-window-fix/

As for Task Manager download and run this little utility: http://www.raymond.cc/blog/restore-task-manager-regedit-and-folder-options-disabled-by-virus/
Checkmark ONLY Task Manager in that tool before running it.

Hey! Hope all is well

Well, I ran that http://majorgeeks.com/RRT_Remove_Res...ool_d5635.html and it worked fine. Ive followed your other instructions and it looks like I will have to manually restore hidden file and folders, the option nearest to my own is

Windows Vista 32-bit US English
http://download.blee...32-sm-reset.exe

But is a concern to me before I run it, is that its US English, and I'm over in the UK, will this version run ok ? or is there a euro/ uk version I should run ?

Sorry,

At this link http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com...-hiddendeleted-by-a-virus/#hyperanchor1.3://a[%40id%3D%26quot%3Bentry167099%26quot%3B]%2Ffollowing-sibling%3A%3Adiv[1]%2Fdiv[2]%2Fdiv[1]%2Fspan[12]%2Fstrong[1]%2Fspan[1]%280%29%283%29%28Inc%29%26%2F%2Fa[%40id%3D%26quot%3Bentry167099%26quot%3B]%2Ffollowing-sibling%3A%3Adiv[1]%2Fdiv[2]%2Fdiv[1]%2Fspan[12]%2Fstrong[1]%2841%29%283%29%28y%29%3A%29

I'm following How to restore Start menu and files hidden/deleted by a virus - METHOD 3 - manual

"If, for any reason, Method 1, or Method 2 don't work you can"...

So out of the options available I would choose

Windows XP Pro 32-bit US English
http://download.blee...it-sm-reset.exe

But because it is US English, I'm not sure if it will run, as I guess my windowsXP is Euro not US edition. I'm was wondering whether it would work on my computer, or if there was a English edition. Or it simply doesn't matter. Hope thats cleared up my query.

Hello  I've been trying for some time to How to restore Start menu and files hidden/deleted by a virus, using what you wrote here http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com...-hiddendeleted-by-a-virus/#hyperanchor1.3://a[%40id%3D%26quot%3Bentry167099%26quot%3B]%2Ffollowing-sibling%3A%3Adiv[1]%2Fdiv[2]%2Fdiv[1]%2Fspan[12]%2Fstrong[1]%2Fspan[1]%280%29%283%29%28Inc%29%26%2F%2Fa[%40id%3D%26quot%3Bentry167099%26quot%3B]%2Ffollowing-sibling%3A%3Adiv[1]%2Fdiv[2]%2Fdiv[1]%2Fspan[12]%2Fstrong[1]%2841%29%283%29%28y%29%3A%29

I'm having to follow the "In case, program's link shows as (empty):" guide at the bottom.

When I try do the following

  • Open Windows Explorer, navigate to Avast folder in Program Files
  • Right click on Avast ".exe" file, click "Create shortcut": Copy that shortcut, go back to Start menu.
  • Right click on avast!Free Antivirus, click "Paste".
  • You'll see Avast shortcut recreated replacing (empty) entry.

I am unable to paste, When I right click the options I get are
  • open
  • explore
  • delete
  • rename
  • sort by name
  • properties.

The weird thing is when I click on properties to begin with Avast for instance, where the shortcut is already there. But for a programme such as adobe, I'm following the above route and its not creating a short cut.

I have also tried the following

Alternatively....
...you paste that shortcut in:
(XP) - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Avast

still doesn't work ? If I'm using the above method do I still have to use AppPaths. Please help me out, again.
