Hi there. It all appears to be good, so we will finish up to make sure your computer is protected from malware in the future.

    Clean up System Restore

Now, to get you off to a clean start, we will be creating a new Restore Point, then clearing the old ones to make sure you do not get reinfected, in case you need to "restore back."
    • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
    • On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
    • Click NEXT
    • Enter a name e.g. Clean
    • Click CREATE
You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:
    • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
    • In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
    • Click OK
    • The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
    • Select the More Options Tab.
    • At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
    • Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done

Run OTC to remove our tools

To remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created, please do the following:
    Please download OTC.exe by OldTimer:
    • Save it to your Desktop.
    • Double click OTC.exe.
    • Click the CleanUp! button.
    • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
    • The tool will delete itself once it finishes.
Note:If any tool, file or folder (belonging to the program we have used) hasn't been deleted, please delete it manually.

    Purge old temporary files

NOTE: If you already have this installed, you don't have to reinstall it.

Please download CCleaner Slim and save it to your Desktop - Alternate download link

When the file has been saved, go to your Desktop and double-click on ccsetupxxx_slim.exe
Follow the prompts to install the program.

    • Double-click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
    • A prompt will ask you if you want CCleaner to do a check to see what cookies it needs to keep. Allow that operation.
    • On the Cleaner tab, click on Run Cleaner on the bottom-right to run the program.
    • Important: Make sure that ALL browser windows are closed before selecting Run Cleaner, or it will ask if you want the program to close them for you (when you do this, all unsaved data may be lost in the browser).

Caution: Only use the Registry feature if you are very familiar with the registry.
Always back up your registry before making any changes. Exit CCleaner after it has completed it's process.

    Security Check

Please download Security Check by screen317 from SpywareInfoforum.org or Changelog.fr.
    • Save it to your Desktop.
    • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
    • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Perhaps this is a related problem.

"Installing Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008 x86 (KB2698023) (update 4 of 8)... failed!"

I downloaded the update NDP1.1sp1-KB2698023-X86 and tried to apply it manually.

    I received the message:
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click OK to try again, or enter, an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'netfx.msi' in the box below.

    Then I received the message:
Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1. The Windows installer cannot continue.

Please remove this program: Spybot - Search & Destroy (does not function as well these days).

    Uninstall Programs:
    • Click on Start and select Control Panel
    • Open Add/Remove Programs
    • Uninstall the following if found:
      • [*]Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1
        [*]Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1
    • Restart your computer if asked to do so during either/both uninstallations
    • Let me know if problem remains.
Please let me know how it goes.

Couldn't uninstall Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1.
But managed to uninstall Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1, which also uninstalled Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1.

But now I can't install Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1, even with Microsoft Update.

The date on my PC is still changing at random.

I'll try to see if Windows Repair helps.

    Please do the following:
    • Download Aaron Stebner's .NET Framework Cleanup tool from here and save it to your desktop
    • Extract the zip file and run the tool
    • When prompted if you wish to run the tool answer YES
    • Click the drop down menu next to Product to cleanup: and only select .NET Framework 1.1
    • Click the Cleanup Now button
    • Reboot your computer once it finishes
    • Visit Windows Update again, you should now be offered .NET Framework 1.1, install it and reboot when prompted
    • Keep visiting Windows Update, installing the updates and rebooting until no more updates are offered
Please let me know how it goes.

    Hi DMJ,

The link doesn’t seem to be working.

I am getting the following message

“Sorry, there was a problem with your last request!
Either the site is offline or an unhandled error occurred. We apologize and have logged the error. Please try your request again or if you know who your site administrator is let them know too.”

BTW, I have used the NetFrame cleanup_tool from Microsoft downloaded from this link:

    http://cid-27e6a35d1a492af7.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Blog_Tools/dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip

    That did not help.

    Thank you, DMJ.

The original link worked. I just needed to login to the msdn blog.

The cleaner worked great, and I have been able to use MS update to install NetFrame 1.1 and all updates.

    Excellent!

    Any more issues?

We need to know any other issues that are plaguing your computer. Kindly give a summary so we know how to continue from here.

Many of the things to note for us would be:

    • Slow computer
    • Error messages
    • Fake antivirus alerts or the icon in the system tray
    • svchost.exe running at 100%
    • System crashes or blue screen of death

I have none of the problems that you have listed above.

The system time was the only problem (till the Netframe problem cropped up).

The system time is now falling back by a few hours, as opposed to jumping decades.

I still haven't run the Windows Repair that you had suggested.

I was planning to use it as a last resort.

I shall give it a try and report back if the system time problem is resolved.

Let me know what happens with that.

    Hi DMJ,

I have run the Windows Repair (downloaded from the link provided by you.0

I still have the problem of the system time changing. When I booted up today, I was behind by about 10 hours.
