One of the stupidest things I have ever heard. I had 660 gtx 'till a month ago and it was immposibble to play, bf3 was on 30 fps on any settings, but thats not even the worse, game was crashing due to nvidias drivers every 10 minutes. In AC3 I had 30 fps but that 30 fps were like 15, stutering all over the place and as for Image quality picture on AMD cards is much sharper, here is a clip to confirm it... At the end I was forced to return the card cause it was useless and came back to 6850...

It kind of looks like PhysX might be on for the nVidia side of that video. I'm not 100% sure but something looked different especially around the clouds of smoke. Either way, I don't think the few data points you guys point out on a much larger chart can really show any sort of trend in either direction. Many people have no such issues with ATI or nVidia so it leads me to believe that there are other issues introduced by other pieces of hardware or software. I hear the same complaints being tossed around by both sides these days and how their side doesn't have these issues.

That problem has been existing almost a year now.
The fault is in nvidias nvwgf2um.dll, 3d library that makes the game crash. Try googling you will be amaised
I actually believed the reviews, that bf3 actually works better on nvidia cards.
    Watta sucker I was...
As for image quality its clear as a day that amd picture is sharper, but you cant see this in all games in AC3 there is no difference, I can tell you that, but in BF3 the difference is more than obvious, its like edges are disolving or smt...
As for the smoke in that video, it looks blury and foggy (just like or items on the video), dont believe that has smt to do with PhysX...
When you play FPS, it doesnt really matter whats the image quality you need frame stability and smoothness (and didnt get any of tha. But when you stop and look around, you see the difference in image quality..

You do realise how dumb that comment is?

High performance graphics cards are all about eye candy, physx or not.

Gameplay, is largely dependent on the game itself, provided you have a computer powerful enough to run it smoothly.

Sadly, a lot of current releases may look really pretty, but I'd probably prefer the challenge of Jet Set Willy. Pretty graphics does not equal gameplay, it merely enhances the immersion experience...sometimes.

Bit late to this party but this article is very helpful since I'll be looking for a GPU upgrade soon...

A lot has changed since November though... drivers have really matured and games have been optimized.

First of all, Nice article, I have some doubts , HD 7970 GHZ is fast, but some comparison videos I watched shows smoother gameplay experience, no shuttering or lag in GTX 680 as well as GTX 680 provides better color saturation, if I look at water or human faces its better in GTX 680 than in 7970. Also whether you have enabled PHYSX, or any other Nvidia specific things? because that will reduce the fps too. Because the difference seems unbelievable. Generally GTX 680 provides much more crisp and clear images than 7970?why?

You probably could've a couple months ago, this is an "old" topic so it won't show on trend and unless someone is following this you won't get a reply

That and half of what he said simply isn't true so I am guessing no one really wanted to deal with it ;)

    Hello Steve & Kibaruk,

Thanks to both of you for replying. I want to buy a GPU, that is the reason I came here. Please see the below video 7970 & GTX 680 side by side comparision, I have watched some videos before asking it here,

    Thanks.

Too much is unknown about the video such as what driver version was used. Furthermore the GTX 680 is NOT faster than the 7970 in BF3 and we test the same section of the game that this video is based on.

Steve, are we gonna see an update on this when AMD releases the stable version of their new driver (13.4 maybe?). Or will you wait for new games?
  15. Steve TechSpot Staff Posts: 911   +88

Not sure there is any need to update the article. How much is the 13.4 driver going to change this article? We are testing the 7990 this week and that review is based on the 13.3 and 13.5 beta drivers, results are much the same for cards like the 7970 as they are in this article.

AMD is working on a "Frame Pacing Prototype" driver right now which we have the second version of so once that driver is complete we will likely do an article that looks at fps and frame time performance.

Well, isnt the latest driver 13.3 beta? It hasnt been updated since March 20, 2013. As for 13.5, is that a typo or did you all get it early? Isnt that Frame Pacing Prototype the latency improvements in 13.3 beta?

When are you allowed to benchmark the 7990 this week? Is there an NDA placed on it?
  19. Steve TechSpot Staff Posts: 911   +88

Yeah there is an NDA in place and it is lifted on the 24th so keep your eye out for that one, we have done lots of testing for you ;)
