Ukraine war sees Biden administration probe into Kaspersky Lab intensify

In brief: The Biden administration has been ramping up the pressure on antivirus software giant Kaspersky Lab since the start of the Ukraine war over fears Russia could use its products to spy on western governments, agencies, and companies.

Reuters reports that the US launched a security probe into Kaspersky Lab last year. It was referred to the Commerce Department by the Department of Justice, but Commerce made little progress on the case.

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February, however, the White House urged the Commerce Department to move forward with the probe as it feared federal contractors and operators of critical US infrastructure who use Kaspersky Lab software could be at risk of infiltration.

We welcome the start of negotiations to resolve the current situation in Ukraine and hope that they will lead to a cessation of hostilities and a compromise. We believe that peaceful dialogue is the only possible instrument for resolving conflicts. War isn't good for anyone.

The White House was quick to take action against Kaspersky Lab following Russia's actions. It became the first Russian company added to the FCC list of entities deemed an unacceptable threat to US national security in March. The designation came soon after Germany warned its citizens to stop using the company's software, something Kaspersky Lab said was "a response to the geopolitical climate rather than a comprehensive evaluation of the integrity of Kaspersky's products and services."

Kaspersky Lab was under the microscope of suspicion long before the Ukraine invasion. It faced claims in 2017 over a possible compromise of its source code by Moscow, and President Trump banned the use of its antivirus products on federal government machines in the same year, for which the company filed a lawsuit.

Precisely what extra measures the US could take against Kaspersky Lab as a result of the probe's findings are unclear, though there's always the possibility that its products will be banned entirely in the United States.

Kaspersky Lab has long denied it has any links to or could be coerced by the Russian government. The company says it moved its data-processing infrastructure to Switzerland in 2018.

Kaspersky software has been a National Security threat for more than a decade and it was banned from all systems under my control way back then when I first tested their AV products

Kaspersky didn't "exfiltrate" anything. The fault lay ENTIRELY with that imbecile contractor who violated all security protocols at the NSA and brought classified information home and put it on his home machine which was running Kaspersky.

Kaspersky then did the job that he bought it for, which was running frequent scans for things that look like malware. When the program found something suspicious it uploaded it for a more thorough inspection. This is the the same procedure carried out by all the major anti-virus programs, but on Kaspersky it must be selected as an OPTION by ticking a box at install time.

That said, it is only prudent for all major government, banks, educational institutions etc to stop using Kaspersky just out of reasonable caution. The company is still at risk of of Putin putting a gun to their head, and making an offer that they can't refuse.

The investigation did not find any "smoking gun" that Trump personally colluded with Russia, but there's more then enough evidence on aggregate to conclude collusion did in fact happen.

As for the impeachment, Trump remains the only President in US history to have a member of his own party vote in favor of impeachment. Which in the current political climate should tell you all you need to know.

And I note all the Clintons did here was misrepresent what the spending was for; there's literally nothing here. What you're doing is just highlighting a headline in an attempt to try and get an emotional reaction, hoping no one actually bothers to read and understand what actually happened.

And yet, despite all the loud complaining about "her emails", those same people suddenly get quiet and defensive when asked "where's the nine hours of recordings from the official oval office recording system"? Or maybe if you prefer: "But his phone records!".
