Okay, I placed the USB HDD in 1st position now and saved the changes, but when I rebooted it still booted with windows... Do I have to do anything else to make it boot on the flash drive?

See if another working computer will boot from the USB you just created.
  3. Emerik Newcomer, in training Posts: 51

It didn't seem to work... also, when I started my computer (the one that is working) and tried plugging in the USB again, the computer is not able to find it.

Possibly something wrong with that USB stick.

    Do you have another one?
  5. Emerik Newcomer, in training Posts: 51

Yeah I do, but it is identical to the first one... and it doesn't work either. Although the first one could be found when I was installing the OTLPE...

I can only assume you did something wrong when creating that bootable stick.
    Format it and retry.
Maybe bad download as well, so download fresh file.

Well, I can't format it since the computer can't find it?
  8. Broni Malware Annihilator Posts: 40,063   +187

    Working computer?
  9. Emerik Newcomer, in training Posts: 51

Yes. What I meant is that the working computer can't even find the stick when running in windows, in "My computer". And I can't even find the other stick that hasn't even been used. It's like the drivers for the stick didn't exist. This happened after I tried booting my stationary computer (working one) from the stick.

I'm not sure what to tell you except for getting another USB flash drive.

Okay, I will get a new - just making sure you understand what happened:

I installed OTLPE on my first stick. It didn't work on the laptop, and when I tried booting it on my desktop computer it didn't work either. When I started the desktop computer in normal mode again and inserting the stick (when in windows) to see if there was anything wrong about the files, the computer couldn't find the stick at all. After that, I tried inserting a new stick, (which was identical in model to the first one) the computer couldn't find that one either, making me think perhaps something happened when trying to boot it with the desktop computer.

Anyway, there we are. I'm getting a new flash drive in a few days, and I'll see if it works. Thanks for the help.

Okay, I tried with a new flash drive now... I installed it like last time, and inserted it in my laptop and booted it. I chose the "Boot with temporary device", and this time it could find the "USB HDD etc..." The problem is that when i pressed it, nothing happened except for a text that appeared in the corner that said "Remove portable device. Press any key to reboot". But when I pressed a key the only thing that happened is that I was sent back to the "Choose temporary device to boot with"-menu. That happened over and over.

What I did notice when installing the OTLPE to the flash drive was that in the eeepcfr-program's cmd-window which opened after running the copy, there were some facts about the copy, and here's the log to it:

    Program - usb_prep8.cmd - 01 dec 2007 - Date = 2012-01-19 16:46:58
Prepares Windows XP Setup LocalSource for Copy to USB-Drive

*** BEFORE YOU START: *** Use 2 GB USB-stick with High Read/Write Speed
First Format to Make Bootable USB-stick with FAT FileSystem, FAT = Faster
such that USB-stick has NTLDR Bootsector and is seen by BIOS as Harddisk

Use PeToUSB.exe with Settings: Enable Disk Format with LBA FAT16X

OR Use Existing USB-stick with NTLDR Bootsector and Multi BOOT.INI Menu
    GUIDE: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=20089

For AUTOSTART: COPY PeToUSB.exe in your usb_prep folder
    http://gocoding.com/page.php?al=petousb

For UNATTENDED Install make Changes in usb_prep folder:
Change Product Key in winnt.sif and Change $OEM$ folder to your needs

FOR USB-Harddisk make 1900 MB partition at beginning of the USB-Harddisk
Use FAT Format and Set Active OR use PeToUSB to Format such partition
rdummy.sys makes Fixed USB-Harddisk seen in XP Setup as Removable Device

Tryck ned valfri tangent för att fortsätta...

    Program - usb_prep8.cmd - 01 dec 2007 - Date = 2012-01-19 16:54:40

Prepares Windows XP LocalSource for Copy to USB-Drive:

    0) Change Type of USB-Drive, currently [USB-stick]

    1) Change XP Setup Source Path, currently []

    2) Change Virtual TempDrive, currently [T:]

    3) Change Target USB-Drive Letter, currently []

    4) Make New Tempimage with XP LocalSource and Copy to USB-Drive

    5) Use Existing Tempimage with XP LocalSource and Copy to USB-Drive

    F) Change Log File - Simple OR Extended, currently [Simple]

    Q) Quit

    Enter your choice:

I just closed this window because the copy was done, but I notice it say "Windows XP", which might have to do with it? Maybe the OTLPE isn't compatible with Windows 7 64-bit?

It has nothing to do with Windows version as it boots independently.

Try to boot another working computer with the USB stick you just created.
    See if it works.
  14. Emerik Newcomer, in training Posts: 51

Okay, tried it on other computer and got the same result and text... "Remove portable devices" Press any key to reboot" This will reappear when pressing a key.
  15. Broni Malware Annihilator Posts: 40,063   +187

It looks like you're doing something wrong with creating that bootable USB stick.
It doesn't seem to be bootable.

I've certain I've followed the instructed given on the link... even done it twice now :/
  17. Broni Malware Annihilator Posts: 40,063   +187

At this point I'm not sure what else we can do.
Unless you make your CD drive working and try CD way.
  18. Emerik Newcomer, in training Posts: 51

    It doesn't have a CD drive :/

So there's no other way? No other ways to boot it?
  19. Emerik Newcomer, in training Posts: 51

How about this - when starting the computer I can access the "Launchup repair" or whatever, and there I can access the "system restore" I have a restore point which is from before I started this thread. If I try to restore maybe I can start all this from scratch?

All I can see is this...
If the USB stick doesn't boot another good working computer it must be something wrong with the stick or you're not doing it right.
    I see no other option.
