Want to play Blu-ray on my old comp -- can it be done?

As far as using the USB drive to transfer "programs," I wouldn't get my hopes up too much. You're not going to be able to just "copy" them over from one machine to the next. Your best route is to round up all your installation disks or setup files. You did save those, right?

If not, Laplink might be of service. http://www.laplink.com/pcmover/pcmoverhome.html

And I know it's a tad too late, but I'm not so sure I would have spent so much on the motherboard and the ram, but so little on the graphics card. Just my 2c.

Ya, been kind'a hard

Some of the stuff was contained in it's own folder and that worked right away, but some of the stuff had files all over the system and I had to try and find them--pulling teeth! Got a few more to work that way but some of them are just too lost in 500GB's of HDD. And when I treid to just download the whole damn system windows kept stopping me with "Program in use" can't access files--I'm going to try to go into "SafeMode" and give it one more shot. But it hasn't been a total loss, I've found a lot of free stuff out there that works just as good as the old stuff--if not better! Damn, I've learned more in the past few then in the past ten!--And still sooo much to go!

My friend Sneeky! I HAVE DONE IT!!!! I have made a Dell Dimension 4500 play BD's! All it took was a FSP Group FSP460-60GLC 460W Power Supply made for Dell (Sold by: VegasMicro) and a HIS H465F1GHA Radeon HD 4650 1GB 128-bit DDR3 AGP 4X/8X HDCP Ready vid card [NewEgg] (Needed to use a four pin IDE power plug on it)! And even better; I can watch BD's on my HDTV on one screen and on my VGA still cruse the net with hardly a skip! My friend will be very happy to have such a good ol beast!
Now let's get to the good stuff! I put the New Beast together--it took some time, indiviual pins for the front panal Dual USB; Mic; Headphones Power; Reset; LCD and fans--nightmare! If I didn't have a clue...? So, this is what I got, I used everything I got on my list except the CPU cooler, Intel told me they wern't goin for it! Use the one it had or kiss the warrenty goodbye!--they have not a bad one--s**t, fit right into the board (Made for it). So, got right to it--and dammit had an error message! Looked at the book and it didn't tel you s**t for that error code! so I looked at a simular code and it said something about mem--mem! The sticks ain't in right! is what came to mind--pushed them in place and YaHoo!!! Off and running! This thing hassn't hicuped since the first boot. Loaded XP64(All I Got)and the only problems I've had is that a lot of my old software doesn't like XP64! Partitioned the drive for 7 later... I HATE BILL! LOL! I overclocked up to 4.0 from 3.8, did the hyperthreading thing and got my mem cards at there max bandwith--thing purrs. Never exceeds 160 F even at all the stuff I get goin on it at one time idiles at 80 F. And Sneeky, 450Watts is doin the job! But remember--With this beast there is so much room for expansion! Miss you man--hope to here from you soon...

I'm so glad for you...

Hello there dspgandalf!! How r u doing man? Seems like you've had a lot of fun dealing with the Dell and your new rig too, that's the way to go!

So finally the Dimension has now years to come thx to a couple of upgrades, if more people were as daring as you they wouldn't have to be spending so much for new computers...

And what about your NEW rig? How's that Sandy Bridge cpu serving you, I hope your making it sweat cuz you have a little beast there buddy.

Well, in the end I'm pleased you could pull it off by yourself [respect] and from now on you can trust the TechSpot community to help you out in the future.

Send me an email so we can continue off the forums alright? Take care Scotty!
