What does "flashing an SSD" mean?

  1. I was looking for an external SSD for backups when I came upon one with highly polarized reviews (link below). One of the positive reviews says the drive needed to be "flashed" before it would work properly, and that the negative reviews are coming from people who don't know about this.

How do you flash a drive? What does flashing do?

I did a quick look around and didn't find any helpful information, other that that it has something to do with erasing all the sectors. (It doesn't help that "flash" has a second SSD-related meaning.)

Generic term for upgrading the SSD firmware, also commonly applied to updating your computer's BIOS.
