Maybe this image will help me explain. DSL signaling is filtered from the phone line and stops at the modem. The blue cables in the diagram are networking cables known as Ethernet cables.

Phone plug uses a max of 6 pins (2-pins per phone line, 3 lines max) and a connector known as RJ-11 (6-pin connector)
Ethernet plug uses 8 pins (2-pins transmit, 2-pins receive, 4-pins reserve) and a connector known as RJ-45 (8-pin connector)
