Windows 10, the TechSpot Review

So much complaining around here, I even though the score was going to be higher, but I'll stay with conclusion that Windows 10 is the best windows experience now. I haven't tried it, but it definitely looks better than previous windows and superior to any OS

Sorry going to have to speak for yourself on Windows 8. I never had a problem with it and was always faster than 7 so I didn't get what all the hubbub was about.

Why would I want a start menu that can't be organised into folders, only scroll and scroll..?
Why would I want what I search for on my computer getting sent to bing/microsoft datacentres?
Why would I want the underlying code kept secret, remotely controlled, altered and permanently hooked into the could beyond my control?
Why would I want my os to serve me ads? (https://www.theverge.com/2015/4/29/8514345/windows-spotlight-lock-screen-with-ads)
Why would I want all that spy and logging crap I spent so long digging out of xp,win7 to be completely unknown again and working away in the background?
Why would I want my machines bios injected with code to ensure im paid up?
why would I want to "use page prediction to preload pages, which sends your browsing history to Microsoft." ? < win10 install screen & defaulting to On.

I can understand when people complain about the fact that MS is still using the very old NT kernel which has performance, security and stability issues compared to other OSes or the fact it still uses NTFS, but when you say the OS is bad because of a color then it's clear that they are just trolling.

just look at the guest above me... he is complaining about bing and MS getting his data. why the hell is he even using the internet. everything there is recorded by someone. and half of what he wrote is wrong. he is misinformed or he is intentionally lying. (underlying code kept secret? remote controlled? ads? spying? etc - does he like stupid conspiracy theories?) it's why I keep saying that these "haters" are usually too stupid to actually research what they are writing about.

The only reason anyone should upgrade to 10 is if they have 8, an actual failed desktop OS for reasons other than people's ignorance (aka Vista).

DirectX 12 being exclusive is the only thing that will force adoption. It is -the- API to use for all games going forward. But again, it's a new API version and not just a drop in upgrade for DX11, so this will forever hurt all old games developed before 12's release, just as it will hurt people who hate 8+'s UI and want to stay on 7.

Oh, and the OS isn't even finished to boot.

Other than it actually being free for 7/8 owners (hello, where's Vista?), this is a complete failure towards consumers.

I will be forced into it just as I was forced into 7, except this time I'll be forced rapidly due to its exclusive API, whereas Vista did get DX11 too and lasted a long while. Oh well, wasting my breath saying anything further, nothing will ever change the outcome of events, and consumer backlash won't be enough to get them to port DX12 to 7, as the damned OS is free. *sigh*

There'll be a huge hilarious rage fit as naive people flock for the newest thing only to discover what they lost and that their key is used for this free upgrade which they cant change back.

I guess I'll be sticking to Windows 7...

This attitude is borderline neanderthal at this point.

You know what, fine. Stick to Windows 7! Enjoy the lack of features and speed, and be left in the dust. Did you not read the review, which described in detail how Windows 10 is better in every possible way than Windows 7?

Can't wait to upgrade all my PCs on Wednesday. Meanwhile I'm off to do some more facepalming.

" Windows 10 will only achieve greatness if Microsoft keeps updating it as promised." = not a CON. If it is, might as well change the software name and the producer and implant it in every software review.

There are so many dumb, silly power users on the Internet it hurts my mind.

So many people are complaining about "disrupted workflow" on Windows 8.1 when the literally only change to the workflow is instead of hitting Start to search for some program installed you need to hit Start+S or Start+Q. Such a monumental shift, my dear god.

Also, I'm truly sorry for all the poor souls who remained on Windows 7 since 8.x launched. I've loved the better battery life on my laptops, the improved smoothness on all my machines, the new Task Manager, the new File Copy UI/UX, I love how everything is now flat and not transparent and distracting as before. I loved IE10, respective IE11 when they launched because they were the fastest browsers on the market. Expect the same for Edge now on Windows 10. I've loved the start/shutdown/sleep/resume times on Windows 8.x. Windows 7 is a SNAIL compared to Windows 8.x. Even on traditions HDDs.

I've also had dramatically fewer BSODs on 8.x compared to Windows 7. Maybe it’s due to a maturation of AMD/Nvidia drivers over time, maybe it’s because Windows 8’s WDDM 1.2/1.3 was simply better at managing resources or code exceptions than Windows 7’s WDDM 1.1.

Anyway, I’m glad I got rid of Windows 7. Everything is much smoother it’s unreal how sluggish W7 feels. I fully expectt Windows 10 to be as fast or faster than Windows 8.x due to WDDM 2.0. Personally, I’m not completely sold on the new Start Menu (I seriously liked the one on Windows 8), especially not performance wise. Even with the OS fully up to date, it still fails to start, search or index a result properly. Even using the Windows Phone style letter jumping bugs out occasionally, but eh, these are the early days.

I fully expect by January 2016 Windows 10 to be the most stable, fast and efficient OS Microsoft has ever produced. Which is kind of a technological marvel considering the same underlying OS will be powering desktops, laptops, phones and the Xbox One.

Is there a problem with apostrophes ? I copied my comment from Office 2016 in Opera v30 and every apostrophe is messed up. Oh well.

If you can't bother to create an account when making stupid critique comments then don't bother writing. Everything you guys wrote as "guests" is wrong and it's mostly because of misconceptions or misinformation.

All people need to know is that windows 10 is better than win 7/8 even if it's not exactly perfect. If you don't want all of the new features and performance improvements because you don't like the colors of the UI then you have some pretty serious "issues".

There are posts stating that you must unistall and then reinstall the driver as "clean install" all while in safemode.

PS: In Windows 8.1 Update 1, Microsoft introduced a feature which allowed the full OS (16-22 GBs) to be shrinked to as low as 2.3 GBs. This was mostly a feature limited to Windows tablets and only desktops which had UEFI capable motherboards and SSDs.

In Windows 10, Microsoft adopted this technology on a larger scale. Basically, the OS size is determined by how much ram you have, how fast it is and how fast your SSD is. (obviously if running from SATA III, M.2, PCIe is just as important). If one person has 4 GBs of 1333 ram and a slow HDD, his OS size will be considerably bigger than someone running Windows 10 on 16 GBs of 2133 ram with an SSD running on PCIe.

Just saying, for all those SSD owners out there who keep hanging on to Windows 7.

One thing I hate about Windows 10 is the way Windows update is forced to be on. I like it disabled so that I can check for updates when it's the right time. Fortunately there is a well hidden way to configure it in the Group Policy. Search Google if you want to know the way to do it.

Let me sum up the guest post for those that don't feel like reading it.

I hate windows 10 yet I've barely used it.

Whhaaaaaaaa

some more Whining

whhhhaaaaaaaaaaa

That's about sums it up folks nothing to see here moving on.

You can select the day, hour, and minute when the OS to restart after updates are installed. It's the most control Microsoft has given users so far.

Not to give bing and ms my data.

The code is not open for review, it's altered without user oversight (forced updates), its permanently hooked into their cloud when online.
Online searching/suggestions is integrated into file/local searching.
Their intention was to track and put ads on the lock screen (https://www.theverge.com/2015/4/29/8514345/windows-spotlight-lock-screen-with-ads).

I'm a windows user, ive had to put up with and fight against this $hit to retain control. I know some of whats in there because of having to waste time digging out and disabling crap.
.. everything there is recorded by someone .. stupid conspiracy theories?
Hmm?

Win10 is primarily a mobile orientated os rushed out solely for the purpose of milking the exploding tablet/mobile space, its a conspiracy theory to think otherwise, Its glaringly aparrent in the UI in front of your face. Nothing stopped them focusing on and 'improving' win7 with such energy otherwise. I like new stuff too but come on, suckers get taken advantage of.

When you need two control panels to change settings you know there's a problem...

When you're installing phone Apps onto your desktop you know there's a problem...

When you search dev and nothing related to device manager comes up you know there's a problem...

When the search engine fails to find what your looking for locally but instead searches the internet instead you know there's a problem...

Other than DX12 there really is no benefit to Win10, boot times are practically identical via SSD. It's also better just using sleep mode anyways.

Use the control panel you prefer

Phone apps should be used for tablet mode

Other two are bugs that will certainly be fixed

When your four biggest gripes are very minor things and are your reason for trashing Win 10 you know there's a guest troll lurking about

No I don't call it an abomination because of the colors but because of the horrible functionality. When people said they wanted the Start Menu back they meant the one from Windows 7 and earlier; instead Microsoft took the Metro start screen, shrunk it down, and said here you go. It's a disaster.
I don't think so at all. When I was running the Technical Preview full time I had the Windows 10 Start Menu all set up with all of the programs and apps that I use the most all pinned to my Windows 10 Start Menu. In all I had almost 20 to 25 different programs and icons conveniently pinned to the menu. When all was said and done I sat back, looked at it and said to myself...

"Now this is convenient. All of my most used things all easy to access without having to search or go to the desktop to find the icon. It's all there, pinned and ready to go. Gee, I couldn't have done this on Windows 7's Start Menu, there's just not enough room on the old Start Menu for all of these apps."

So no, this new Start Menu can be very convenient, fast, and easy to use if you just spent some time like I did and customized it to what you need it to be. Five minutes was all it took and immediately the Start Menu in Windows 10 was ten times more useful than the one in Windows 7.

Nothing in the interface that can't be fixed by Classic Shell! I find the present one the worst of both worlds, unattractive and messy. Have removed all the start panels but they were pretty colors!!
Found EDGE surprisingly good and fast.
Control panel AND settings? Would have preferred a combined function.
Doesn't appear to be any more functional than 7 or 8 but a lot of gimmicks, most of which resolve around Microsoft becoming very much more intrusive. Will play around with it and see how I feel in a few months.
Like most of us on this site, I just want a system that works efficiently without a lot additional garbage that I will never use.

If you have to make it free to sell it, it must be that great... Benchmarks will show very little to no difference between the two, however cooperate environments will NEVER move over to 10, also a lot of software simply won't function in 10, you're actually going backwards.

Wait wtf! Im sorry but I dont trust Microsoft with my face, iris or fingerprints and I certainly wouldnt want cortana to collect and use my location, location history, contacts, searching history, calendar details, communication history from messages and apps and other information on my device just to search for something uhhh I mean look what happened with apple, they said fingerprints would only ever be stored on the phone and they had a damn patent about storing and using it in the icloud while they said that!?

That 6th picture is really unsettling, how can I be sure I can switch it off, burn it, never to start up, ever, any way at all, that all the service things that make it work are OFF?? That is scary.
