Windows XP Pro SP2 Hangs on Setup

Ok Guys,

Here's a new Update from the shop to which I RMA'd my PC to ;

They said that after testing each and every component, they found out that it's the Power Supply which causes the CPU to Overheat and Trips the shut down or hangs (they say) when the system is Under Load (Working Hard). They also said that using the same components but changing to their own power supply of 350 Watts worked without a problem.

So I informed them to change the power supply unit with a new one but they say that they don't have Ready Stock for the 650W one and that they have the 500W one ready stock. So I told them to change it with the 500W one if it works.

One thing that have been bothering my mind is it possible that a Power Supply can cause CPU Over Heating ? Is it possible ?? How ?

Can anyone here please explain to me if this is possible or are they just pulling my legs!!!

Sounds like a load of balony to me - but! There is always a but - low voltage causes brown-outs and brown-outs can cause electric motors to run hot so I suppose there is a sort of logic in their explanation. Still don't believe it so it would be interesting to see if there were any other changes in the bits in the box?

What Baffles me is that they said that they Took out the mobo and plugged it into their 350W PSU and it worked fine with the same Memory chips and Processor and HDD!!!

New Info Guys ;

The PC ALREADY WORKS... :) :) :)

It turns out that the PSU is the MAIN CULPRIT... As soon as they installed a NEW PSU Thermaltake ToughPower 500W and switched ON everything WORKED... The Windows XP Pro SP2 installation was a ZIP in less than 1 mins... All components are the SAME except for the PSU....

It's funny that the 650W (Brand New) doesn't work and the 500W (Brand New) one works like a CHARM...

The funny part is that they tried to charge me US$50 for their services but I gave them my Lawyers card and told them to send the Invoice to her.. THEY NEVER DID... HE HE HE HE HE... :) :) :)

ALL THIS HASSLE FOR A DAMN PSU UNIT....

Sorry - been away for a day or so as I trashed my own system. I ignored hot electrics smells and the PSU refused to restart on Monday last - a replacement fixed the mechanicals but there was still some collateral damage.
