Windows XP taskbar

  1. Just recently(sometime in the past month) , I noticed a problem with my taskbar. It shows the time correctly and then next to that it has a black rectangle in place of where my active icons used to appear. When I use the arrow to slide out, it leaves a trail and icorporates an additional 2 arrows in the trail. A solution to this problem would be greatly appreciated.

    Dell Dimension 4500 (4yrs old)
    P4 2.26 GHz 256 RAM
    Mostly used for web, storing dig pics, editing

    Sounds like a virus infection. Are you using protection?

    I am using the standard Security Center offered by MS with firewall, virus protection and auto updates. Also AVG Free Edition that updates daily. I have not had any problems or virus alerts since the first run of the programs when they were installed (MS SS with SP2 I think) some time ago.

    Did you add or remove anthing before this began to happen?
