Leading up to the release of Windows XP Service Pack 2, Microsoft has cited an SP2 feature called Data Execution Prevention (DEP) as a key sentry in the fight against viruses and worms responsible for "buffer overruns." Unfortunately, users of AMD-based systems are virtually the only ones who can take advantage of this important technology. Intel-based notebook and desktop systems that support DEP will not start shipping until the end of 2004. My advice: Postpone your planned systems purchases--or go with AMD.

DEP works on my system, although my CPU does not support it (or so SP2 claims).

I guess it is some sort of DEP support through software.

All AMD64 CPUs. AthlonXP does not benefit from it.

Looks like I'm covered. I guess we'll see what kind of difference this makes.
