WiMAX, a wireless alternative to cable and DSL wired broadband technologies, is the brainchild of Intel and was launched six months ago. Its based on the IEEE 802.16-2004 standard, and will use he same 5-GHz spectrum band within the U.S. that the 802.11a WiFi standard uses. Now, Intel have unveiled plans to add the technology to handsets in 2007, when the technology makes its way into chipsets for smartphones.
